Grenfell Tower survivor, Emma O'Connor, reacts to the decision to dismantle Grenfell Tower, which has been met with anger by some bereaved relatives and survivors. Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner told a meeting on Wednesday that the west London tower block, where a fire killed 72 people in 2017, would be dismantled to ground level. But a spokesperson for Grenfell United, which represents some of the bereaved families and survivors, said no-one at the meeting supported it and people "had been ignored". There has been several years of debate over the future of the 24-storey tower, with some hoping it would remain in place as a lasting reminder of the tragedy and others wanting it replaced with a new memorial. A formal announcement by the government is expected to be made on Friday. #Grenfell #westlondon #londonews #london #bbcnews
On this day, 14 June 2017, 72 people were killed in a fire that damaged a residential tower block where people built their lives, made memories and rested their heads at night. This year is the final Grenfell Tower Fire memorial before the remains of the building are removed. Yet, despite the documented history and evidence related to the faults that led to the fire, no one has been held to account. No politicians are in prison, no corporations have been kept from bidding on contracts, or receiving profits. In fact, thousands of people still live in buildings with the same kind of cladding which cut off the oxygen that made life, belonging to the young and the old possible in the first place. Laura Johnson was the director of housing for the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, she manages property at Barnet Homes. She slowed down the implementation of life-saving measures at Grenfell. Brian Martin admitted to being a single point of failure, ignoring advice to improve fire safety. He continued working in the government until 2022 in the Ministry of Housing. Deborah French worked in sales at Arconic, who made the cladding, she sold it knowing that it could burn. But she never told customers. There are many more names on this list. Whilst many of their careers continued unaffected, others lives were lost and transformed forever.
