This took eight hours! My beautiful guest came in with a big mixture of colour…warm tones, reddy tones, darker patches, lighter patches, and heavy build-up throughout. It was multi-tonal from roots to ends. This lovely guest was confused and overwhelmed. We’d had a long consultation before, and she’d been struggling with her grey for years. She wanted to embrace it but didn’t know how. She has her wedding in two years, and I told her: Rather than fighting it, why not embrace who you are now? No more root stress. No more constant colouring. And if she didn’t like it, we could always colour it again. But if she kept adding lighter pieces to blend, it would be almost impossible later to transition her to full grey without severe damage. When I do a colour correction, I don’t dive in or throw bleach all over the head. I’m so careful. I take the tiniest sections, one by one, using foil after foil with different strengths of lightener depending on what each part of the hair needs. I work my way up the head using hundreds of foils, constantly checking the hair, protecting its integrity, and making sure my guest is comfortable throughout. To keep everything looking soft and natural, I mimicked her own grey pattern. I used different colours in different areas …deeper tones where her natural depth existed, lighter tones where she naturally had lighter strands, adjusting everything to match her own grey level and the natural darkness in her hair. It’s this level of detail that makes the result believable, gentle, and seamless. It’s hard work…my back was absolutely broken after but it’s worth every second. 😊 She drove all the way from Surrey in the early hours and left late at night and it was absolutely worth it. My client has been coloring her hair very dark for years and was ready to let her greys grow in without looking dull or unfinished. To help soften the grow-out, I did high-contrast highlights to blend the greys while keeping dimension and edge. Because this was a major color correction, I started with a strand test (non-negotiable). Good news: the hair could handle it Real talk: some areas needed 3 rounds of re-lightening in one session, others needed 2. This took many hours, and a lot of patience but it was SO worth it.
