I'm Koromo.
Good morning! I'm Koromo,
a Richardson's ground squirrel living in a quiet corner of Japan's Kyushu region. 🐿📢
A tiny Cascade local !
The Cascade golden-mantled ground squirrel (Callospermophilus lateralis), is native to the Pacific Northwest, spending the short mountain summer eating and preparing for a long winter underground. 🇺🇸

Meet Joe our Round-tailed ground squirrel (Xerospermophilus tereticaudus). 🐿️
Known to be very social, these little ones live in small colonies and hibernate through the winter months, emerging in early February to take advantage of the new spring growth to regain the weight they lost over the winter.
Looks like Joe is doing his part and bulking up one bite at a time!😋
After his quarantine period he will start his training with our Interpretive Animal Collection keepers and eventually work with Docents and Education staff.
Sniffing at lightning speed!
This young California ground squirrel’s tiny nose was working so fast, we had to slow the video down to catch it! Squirrels rely heavily on their sense of smell to explore the world around them: finding food, recognizing familiar scents, detecting danger, and learning about their surroundings.
All those little sniffs are sending a flood of information to their brains. For a curious youngster, every new smell is a chance to learn something new. 🌿
🐿️ Ground Squirrel Digs a Burrow — Then the Babies Emerge!
Watch this incredible ground squirrel family story unfold underground. The mother squirrel rapidly digs and clears a safe underground burrow, creating a protected nursery beneath the soil.
Then comes the beautiful moment — tiny baby ground squirrels emerge from the burrow, one after another, seeing the outside world for the first time. 🌿🐿️
A remarkable glimpse into ground squirrel behavior, burrow digging, wildlife parenting and baby animal life in nature.

Who needs a baby ground squirrel cuteness boost? 🥹🐿️ How cute are they from 1 to 10?
Here’s your Sunday dose of cuteness 😊🐿️❤️

🥜 Think you’re just attracting squirrels with that salted peanut or cheese puff? Think again!
🐿️🐍 Animals fed by humans learn to gather in the same places we gather, and eventually their predators do too.
🐍 As temperatures warm, the park typically begins to receive more calls to relocate rattlesnakes from viewpoints, log benches, and popular trailside lunch spots. While we can only imagine what goes on in the mind of a rattlesnake, they might as well protest “...but they invited me!”
🐿️ In a park with over two million annual visitors, our collective actions quickly create collective consequences. Here in the desert southwest, rattlesnakes are a key group of species that control rodent populations our food and garbage can help create. So next time the chipmunks and squirrels seem a bit too “friendly”, encourage them to move along by keeping your snacks (and scraps) to yourself.
True animal lovers help wild animals stay wild.
[🎥 NPS Video shows an image of a golden-mantled ground squirrel sitting on a stone ledge as a hand holding a peanut approaches. Voice says “Oh he is so friendly, let’s you get right up next to him”. The image of the squirrel quickly changes to one of a rattlesnake and the hand quickly pulls away to the sound of a rattling tail.]

Might as well call us the Uinta Ground Squirrel Refuge in June & July! 🐿️
This species of rodent is native to the area, and oh wow are they abundant! You’ll find them along the Refuge Road, often times carelessly running out into moving traffic.
They go into hibernation sometime in August and won’t emerge again until March or April 😴
