La Guimbarde (Jaw harp) :
🔗
Dans la famille des percus, c'est une petite lamelle en acier qui est fixée à une armature en bois ou en métal.
Pour en jouer, il faut la mettre contre les dents et la faire vibrer en utilisant la bouche en caisse de résonances ⬇️

One of the world’s greatest melodic Mouth Harp makers has just passed away.
A gem of a kind hearted soul, Bernard Lalanne-Cassou was a master craftsman of the French Guimbarde, a renowned expert in butterflies & moths, and a meticulous collector both of butterflies and Mouth Harps of the world.
•
This last May I had the blessed fortune to spend two days with Bernard & his wife Jeanne at their quaint little home in Paris, an ancient two-story house with a garden sandwiched in time between modern city apartment blocks.
I had first met #Bernard on a trip to Siberia back in 2011, and I had planned to visit him someday on one of my trips through Paris. Year after year passed until finally I found an opportunity to meet him again.
•
Spending time with Bernard & Jeanne over potatoes au gratin with cheese & wine, sharing collections and experiences of Mouth Harps & memorabilia, how thankful I am to have been able to turn this dream into a reality.
•
Bernard’s collection of Mouth Harps is legendary, with hundreds of rare pieces all individually labeled and stored in drawers from a lifetime of collecting.
Equally legendary is his collection of thousands of butterflies from the world over, personally hand-netted & displayed in glass cases, categorized & filed away on shelves up to the ceiling like volumes in a personal library.
•
Bernard’s workshop was in the basement, and there I had the luck to watch and document the making of a Guimbarde from scratch.
At the end he presented this harp to me as a gift. Wearing it since on a string around my neck, every time I play I remember him fondly.
•
During my visit I also had the great fortune to acquire several of Bernard’s Guimbardes for #TheWorldHarpsCollection, and out of these I had the pleasure to select a few for my own enjoyment.
Bernard’s Guimbardes have become my new favorites, for I’ve begun exploring deep into the #Melodic style of Mouth Harp playing.
•
Bernard has picked up a pair of one of his beloved butterfly wings & soared away, leaving behind his melodies in our mouths & our ears, and his soft words and memories in our minds & hearts.
We love you, Bernard.
