Grizzly Gulch reopened just in time for World Bear Day! Since late Fall, our grizzly bear sisters, Kiona and Kachina, and our black bears, Juneau and Valdez, have been in torpor, that natural period when bears expend less energy. During winter months, instead of going into full hibernation, brown and black bears go into torpor, which is a time of lower activity and metabolic rates. During torpor, our bears would choose whether they want to explore their habitat or sleep in their dens. Kiona and Kachina were given access to the Gulch, and this morning, on a beautiful sunny day, with the pool water glistening and a new giant reflective ball to play with, the girls came out…and chomped on fresh grass. It was only later that they enjoyed their pool! As for Juneau and Valdez, caretakers gave them an especially tasty treat – worms in old, rotted logs, that the bears instantly destroyed! Worms are a great source of protein, and the bears loved digging their claws through the termite-eaten logs to find them. Happy World Bear Day!🐻 #sfzoo #bear #grizzly

What’s being used as a parking lot is actually where Atlanta was born. The Gulch, once the railroad junction that gave the city its first official name “Terminus,” later became a sunken gap that divided downtown as cars and highways changed how Atlantans commuted. Now, a $5 billion redevelopment called Centennial Yards is transforming the 50-acre site with apartments, retail, hotels and entertainment. The project hasn’t been without controversy. Centennial Yards opted to pay Atlanta an in-lieu fee instead of building affordable housing units inside its first residential building. But, city leaders are optimistic that the project will reconnect downtown neighborhoods and ignite what could be the biggest revival of the area since the 1996 Olympics. WE HIT THE JACKPOT AT HONG KONG DISNEYLAND 🐿️✨ The moment Grizzly Gulch opened around 10:30am, we went straight to Chip ’n’ Dale Lucky Nugget Spin because this was the one game we really wanted to try! The queue was already getting crowded, but we managed to join the first batch and waited around 25 minutes before reaching the front. And right before our turn, someone won the big golden nugget prize and walked away with the Chip plush 😭 That was the moment both of us looked at each other and asked, “Are we feeling lucky today?” Our answer? Not really. 😆 But we still went for it because even if we did not win the biggest prize, the hand fan prize was already super cute, especially with Clarice on it.
