I always look forward to these winter blooms! This Chinese Witch Hazel (Hamamelis mollis) displays gorgeous yellow ribbon-like petaled flowers between January and February in the Pacific Northwest. The blossoms have a light citrusy or spicy fragrance. It’s hardy to zone 5-8, growing to 10-15 feet tall and wide, but may reach 20 feet. The American Witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) blooms in late fall. Native Americans traditionally used this plant for its medicinal properties. It’s also used for making astringents such as those added in skin care products and other topical uses. Phytochemicals, essential oils, and tannins are extracted from the bark, twigs, or small branches and can be soaked in alcohol to make a tincture (used , which takes a few weeks to draw out the active constituents. The tree’s inner bark contains the highest concentration of beneficial compounds. The shrubs grow 12 to 15 feet, and the trees reach 20 to 30 feet. Witch Hazel thrives best in full sun or filtered shade in hot climates.
