Watch this hawksbill mama meticulously dig her nest in Seychelles!🇸🇨🐢 Slowly, she uses her back flippers to scoop the sand out, creating a hole deep enough to safely deposit her eggs!🥚 Although hawksbill nests are pretty shallow - with an egg chamber of about 40 to 50cms, the process is still laborious. To celebrate this day, we wanted to share some facts about sea turtles: 🐢 There are 7 species of sea turtles, 2 of which are Critically Endangered: Hawksbill and Kemp’s. 🐢 Hawksbill turtles use their beaks to help extract their favorite prey. 🐢 Sea turtles lay their eggs in a nest they dig in the sand with their rear flippers. The group of eggs is called a clutch. 🐢 Most sea turtles nest at night—Kemp’s ridleys are the only sea turtles that routinely nest during the day. 🐢 Leatherback sea turtles have existed in their current form since the age of the dinosaurs! 🐢 Sea turtles don’t retract into their shells. 🐢 Sea turtles are deep divers and can stay underwater for long periods of time. This #hawksbill straggler needed a few extra days to reabsorbe all of its residual yolk. Its siblings were already long gone when we found it among the eggshells and unhatched eggs 🥚. I am glad it worked 💪🏻, and it was ready to start its journey, although all by itself and without the protection of a group. #seaturtlebiologist #costarica #seaturtles #babyseaturtles #turtlerescue #seaturtleconservation #seaturtlelove #beoceanminded #savetheseaturtles #saveouroceans #marinebiology #conservationoptimism #iliketurtles

So calm, so peaceful… the sensation a get when a wild animal feels comfortable around me is the greatest gifts of all 🙏🥹 Turtles have such a special place in my heart. The first turtle I ever saw in my life was a green sea turtle in the Canary Islands… I still remember that day, that heartbeat. This is a hawksbill turtle 🐢 It breaks my heart knowing they’re still endangered.
