My week in the APY Lands has reinforced both the strength of culture in these remote communities and the challenges they continue to face. Alongside my friend and colleague Tom Venning, Federal Member for Grey, I’ve been listening to Indigenous elders, teachers, health workers, police, arts centre workers and other service providers about what is working and where we need to do better. With significant federal funding going into remote communities, we must ensure that investment is delivering real results. That’s why I’ve called for an audit of spending in remote communities and for it to be prioritised by the Auditor-General. This visit has also helped me test ideas around the three areas I want to focus on in Indigenous affairs: education, wealth creation and suicide prevention. Strong culture, better outcomes and greater opportunity must go hand in hand.
Hi, I'm Yana, founder of Mother Hope Indonesia. At 24-25 June 2026, I had the opportunity to attend the Asia Pacific Regional Maternal Mental Health Workshop hosted by United for Global Mental Health. One key lesson: across Asia Pacific, we face the same advocacy challenges. Stigma, compounded by gender injustice and extremely limited access to care. Our survey of 3,585 women in MotherHope Indonesia online platform on 2021 showed a concerning fact: only 20% were able to access mental health services. Why? Fear of being labeled "crazy" by health workers, fear of being reported to their partners or community, plus intimate partner violence, poverty, and lack of autonomy to seek help. Meanwhile, our health workers have not been equipped with adequate training for compassionate screening and care. Yet depression is the most common complication of pregnancy, and suicide is a leading cause of maternal death. As WHO stated, the absence of maternal mental health screening is a policy failure. But this workshop also brought hope. High and low-income countries alike face the same triple burden: stigma, resource constraints, and intergenerational impact. The strategies I am bringing home for Indonesia: 1. Advocate for integrated policy with the Ministry of Health 2. Train midwives and nurses in respectful detection and referral 3. Integrate mental health into primary MCH services 4. Ensure lived experience voices are involved in service planning 5. Address root social drivers: poverty and IPV Sincere thanks to WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, and to representatives from Africa, Indonesia, and all participating countries for sharing your knowledge, experiences, and policies. Grateful to United for Global Mental Health for convening the Asia Pacific Regional Perinatal Mental Health Workshop, 24-25 June 2026. Honored to learn and collaborate with fellow advocates to ensure no mother is left behind. Looking forward to continuing this collaboration.
Today the final ACT fiscal inquiry report was handed down. The top line finding: the Labor Government has spent faster than growing revenue. Meanwhile teachers, waste workers, health workers are striking. Library hours cut. So where’s the money going? 👇 🏠3,600+ Canberran households on the public housing waitlist, many waiting 5 years, while government didn’t even bid for a single home in Round 1 of Commonwealth housing funding. 🐎 $100 million+ handed to the horse racing industry since 2011. $8.6 million this year alone – more than entire ACT sports sector combined. 🩺 Canberra has the worst GP bulk-billing rate in the country, pushing people into already stretched hospitals. The @actgreens are asking: what is Labor choosing to fund, and who are they leaving behind?
$750 MILLION. “Not one red cent more.” Yeah, right. Now Macquarie Point Stadium is heading towards $1 BILLION and the Tasmanian Government still won’t tell us the full cost. Parliament told them to release the updated figures by August. It’s September. CRICKETS. 70% of Tasmanians want the costings released. So bloody release them. If the price hasn’t blown out, prove it. If it has, stop hiding and tell Tasmanians the truth. Because while they’re pouring money into this stadium, 1,700 public sector jobs are being cut, health workers are going and health programs are being slashed. And if the thing isn’t ready by 2028, taxpayers could be slugged nearly another $5 million. I like my footy. But I hope that gold-plated roof is worth it. Because Tasmania’s health system is getting absolutely belted. Wake up.

Before disposable syringes became the global standard, mass vaccination looked very different. During the 1960s, millions of people around the world were vaccinated using high-pressure jet injectors-devices that delivered vaccines by forcing a thin stream of liquid through the skin at extremely high speed. No traditional needle was required. The technology made it possible to vaccinate hundreds of people in a short amount of time, making it especially useful for large public health campaigns and military immunization programs. Health workers could move quickly from person to person, helping protect entire communities against infectious diseases. At the time, these futuristic-looking devices were seen as a major breakthrough in medicine. However, years later, researchers discovered that if the injectors weren't properly maintained or redesigned, tiny amounts of blood could potentially be transferred between patients, raising concerns about the spread of blood-borne diseases. As a result, most multi-use jet injectors were eventually phased out in favor of safer single-use needles and improved injector designs. It's a fascinating reminder of how medical technology evolves-what was once considered the future of vaccination eventually gave way to even safer innovations, all in the ongoing effort to protect millions of lives. #history #historyfacts #viral #explore #allabouthistory
Our doctors, nurses and health workers deserve to feel safe at work. We’ll deploy 70 PSOs to major hospitals across Victoria to protect staff and patients, respond to serious incidents and help keep hospital services running.
Do health workers need a Living Wage? Care workers can't afford to fill up their cars. Our nurses are working overtime just to make ends meet. Health workers across the country are struggling, yet some politicians seem to think that a Living Wage is too much to ask for the kaimahi that keep New Zealand running. This election, working people will be voting for parties that invest in our health system.
Met with our new Health Secretary Rt Hon James Murray MP with my colleague, campaigner and friend @oliviablake_mp. We challenged him and his team as to why MC has and continues to be overlooked or addressed. We have actively been ignored four times by government and by three previous HS’s. We followed up on the all important @tommys graded model of miscarriage care and hand delivered a letter calling for change by countless members of the health, charity and campaigning sectors which had previously not been answered or acknowledged. James and his team have agreed to come back to our requests in writing which I will share with you and have also promised to look at the rollout of the Single patient record (SPR) which will include maternity from 2027 with a full rollout in 2028 encompassing the data requests. They will also look into including services on NHS Online, review how they deliver that advise (the Online NHS Trust and national digital hospital) to help with the postcode lottery of services and a standard of care for local services to work to improving access. They will raise paid bereavement with other departments of government when it was pointed out Northern Ireland have implemented this already. A good days work I would say. Thank you to all who have backed us. We were the strikers today but we know we have brave followers, supporters, colleagues, health workers, charities, families and our lost loves counting on us. Watch this space.

#Trust in health care often begins with the people we meet first: doctors, nurses, and other professionals in health care centres and hospitals. When people feel heard, respected and taken seriously, trust can grow. When health workers have the time, tools and support they need, they are able to build relationships that help people seek care, follow advice and stay connected to health services. At the WHO/Europe #RC76 virtual side event “Trust in science, health systems, and health authorities” on 1 September, participants explored practical ways to build and sustain trust across #HealthSystems.
