let’s talk about fear ⬇️
That day, the waves were massive, the wind was strong, and the ocean was anything but forgiving. But over the past few weeks, I had spent so much time in the water, building confidence and understanding the conditions. Since I started watersports, I’ve never pushed beyond my limits… I always aim for the edge, but I also try to know exactly what’s waiting for me out there. I’m not someone who blindly takes risks and I have no problem saying, “No, that’s too much for me.”
The most important thing in my entire progress has been taking step by step - slowly working my way up to tougher conditions, harder tricks, and new skills, rather than just going all in without knowing what I’m doing. Even that day, with the huge waves, I stood on the beach for 5 to 10 minutes, fully geared up, just waiting. Watching. Being patient. Because waves come in sets - there are moments when they’re massive, and moments when they ease up. I waited for that perfect window and then said, “Okay, now. Let’s go.”
With experience, you learn how to react when a wave crashes over you, where to go, what to do. Of course, things can always go wrong, but I try to minimize risk by wearing a helmet (as a simple example) just to be safer. When you’re out there, whether in a competition or in conditions like this, you’re so focused, so in the moment, that you barely realize what you’re doing. And then later, when you look back, you think, “Wait… where was I today? What did I just do?”
But that’s exactly the thrill of this sport - pushing just beyond your own limits, but always with respect for the power of the ocean.

You asked for more behind the scenes life…so here you go! 😅. Here are some of my tips for a hectic morning like this:
-Hide bubbles from toddlers 🙃
-Buddy system - pair a big kid with a little kid. Many hands make light work!
-Wake up earlier 🫣 #IDunWanna (we had some injuries and messes that slowed me down, okuuuuur?)
-I brought down all the outfits for the Littles, and had them in the kitchen to make it easier for the Bigs to help get them ready
-My “time to go” is actually always 5-15 minutes before we need to ACTUALLY go. This makes space for the inevitable random things that would otherwise make us late.
-Keep an activity/snack bag packed at all times. We use it for restaurants, car rides, church, etc. Bubba took our van to the cabin with him that morning and I should’ve pulled the snack bag out first. Oops.
-What I DIDN’T do this day but should have (been trying to do this more lately and it helps so much) - make my morning drink the night before, and just add ice in the morning. Those precious 1-3 minutes adds up if you’re running late.
-We do “cereal Sunday”. It’s the only time in the week when they can have cereal for breakfast, making it special for them and easier for us.
-Keep coats, socks, and shoes by the door to the garage.
-Don’t hide Christmas presents in your room - it makes a HUGE mess. Did you see that tower or Amazon boxes?? 😂 We actually have a great spot in the basement but had family staying down there, so they will be moved soon and I’ll reclaim my bedroom and bathroom. Finally.
