Since 2003, Yosemite has relied on a Bell 205 — often called a “Huey” — to support both wildland fire response and Search and Rescue (SAR) missions.
This versatile aircraft can haul heavy cargo, transport rescuers, and operate efficiently at high elevations — essential in Yosemite’s rugged terrain.
When a rescue call comes in (often from a visitor via cell phone 📱), the crew swaps firefighting gear for SAR equipment and flies to the coordinates. After a quick aerial recon, they locate the patient and identify a safe landing zone (LZ).
On scene, rescuers unload medical gear and provide care focused on stabilization and rapid transport — by air, ground, or short-haul (a 150-foot line below the aircraft).

When equipped with amphibious floats installed by Wipaire, the AT-802F becomes the Fire Boss scooper air tanker, able to land on and scoop water from nearby lakes, rivers, and reservoirs. From a nearby water source, the 802F Fire Boss can deliver up to 14,000 gallons per hour for extended attack or ground support. An unimproved runway or water-side ramp and fuel are all it needs to be a highly cost-effective forward attack air tanker.
