Due to over-harvesting for their reddish plumage, they now are threatened, but are making a comeback. The American Flamingo similarly was exploited, but can now also be found in similar areas across South Florida. With more conservation efforts, both of these birds can thrive once more in the Sunshine State. My second sighting in this part of Florida in the last year and near a flamingo spot. Herons and egrets usually just stand very calmly and only observe and then move lighting fast to catch their prey. Kingfishers dive into the water with fullspeed and catching them under the water.
