Highgate Cemetery opened in 1839, as part of a plan to provide seven large, modern cemeteries, now known as the “Magnificent Seven”, around the outside of central London.
There are approximately 170,000 people buried in around 53,000 graves across the West and East sides.
What was once a fashionable Victorian gardens fell into disrepair in the 1970s after its closure in the 60s. Volunteers and charities are now working hard to restore this once peaceful burial site 🪦

Highgate has a different feel to most of London.
Originally a hilltop village, it’s still known for its historic streets, independent shops, and some of the best period homes in North London. From Georgian terraces to larger Victorian houses, there’s a real sense of history running through the area.
With the Village at its centre, Hampstead Heath on one side and Waterlow Park on the other, it’s easy to see why people choose to stay here long term.

Me and Viktor visited this cemetery in spring, however I was keeping it to share this now as in November, we celebrate in Slovakia All Saints’ Day (Sviatok všetkých svätých) and All Souls’ Day (Pamiatka zosnulých) by visiting cemeteries that are lit with thousands of candles and where we gather, decorate graves with flowers and light candles to remember those we’ve lost but are still part of us. 🕯️🖤🇸🇰
Here in the Highgate, the remembrance feels quieter and hidden under layers of history. The Cemetery was opened in 1839 and it’s home to over 170,000 souls and around 53,000 graves. Today, it’s a peaceful place wrapped in ivy, known for its gothic beauty and famous residents from political theorist and philosopher Karl Marx to pop culture icon George Michael, as well as other figures who shaped the city. 🇬🇧
Back in the Victorian era, it was a fashionable and popular burial site, admired for its Gothic and Egyptian-style architecture, seen as a landscape park for recreation as well as a place of mourning. Wealthy families created elaborate mausoleums and monuments to showcase their status, and the cemetery became a dramatic and romantic symbol of the Victorian fascination with death and nature. 🌿
