What does it mean to long for a place that no longer exists? 🌄
"Hiraeth" is a Welsh word that embodies a deep sense of homesickness, not just for a physical place, but for a time, person, or era that may no longer be within reach. It’s a nostalgic yearning for the lost places of your past, a pull towards something you can’t quite return to.
This feeling connects us to our roots, reminding us of where we come from and the deep emotional ties we hold, even when the places or people we long for are no longer there.
How does hiraeth show up in your life?

Most Welsh and Cornish speakers would agree that the word Hiraeth/Hireth is overused. I think I may have even seen coffee called Hiraeth on my travels, which boggles the mind!
For anyone who isn't familiar with the word, it means a longing for a place which is out of reach, and in so many ways it epitomises my feelings for Kernow. It's the name of the last track on 'Utopia', a song where I'm trying to understand my relationship to a land and a people who I hold so dear to my heart, and a place I've never had the opportunity to live in. It's a love letter of sorts, and an exploration of my emotional understanding of what Kernow means to me.
HIRETH
Kepar ha spyrys
Kepar ha nepyth nag ysi enos
Y’th yw es bos fur
Gwari mildam brav dh’ow ypmyn
An garrek h’an koes yw moy gwir
An awel an mor yw gwell dhym
Y’th yw es bos fur
Gwari mildam brav dh’ow ypmyn
----------
Like a ghost
Like something that isn’t there
It’s easy for me to be wise
And play a fine game with my mind
The rock and the woods are more real
The breeze and the sea are better for me
It’s easy for me to be wise
And play a fine game with my mind
