The way he stick his tongue out 😭
Playing dead for a hognose snake is a matter of instinct for their survival in the wild.
Their predators are limited, but include birds of prey and other snakes. Their first line of defence is to puff out the skin around their necks and raise their heads off the ground like cobras. Failing this, they may resort to trickery, and play dead hoping this will be unappealing to the predator.
The owner says "I was preparing to feed Midnight, my pet Eastern Hognose snake. Before feeding him, I jokingly touched his dorsal and he dramatically tipped over as he never grew out of his habit of playing dead."

⸻
Heterodon nasicus

I've never seen this before! Mango moved all the substrate, hides, and enrichment to one side of his enclosure! He got a full substrate change 2 days ago and I just found this. Silly boy!
Mango is our original hognose snake! He loves his skull and gets mad if I don't give it to him. I fill the smaller holes on it with hot glue so it's safe for him and he can't get stuck in them 😀
We love our spicy-then-sweet boy Mango!
(Also, yes, his temps are unchanged so he didn't seem to do this to get away from the heat in the back. If they want to cool down, they move themselves off the heat, not all their belongings 😆)

a recently found eastern hognose snake playing dead in my hands. this guy was really committed to the act 😂 #herping #animals #snakes
@robert_rausch showing us a snake that plays dead. This snake is the eastern hognose snake. So why do they play dead?
They do it as a mechanism to survive. They roll over and emit foul smells from their cloaca. This makes it appear as though they’ve been dead and decomposing for a long time, which discourages most predators from wanting to take a bite out of disgust.
