I’m 39 and I’m a little embarrassed to admit:
1. I care way too much about what other people think of me. I can know someone’s opinion shouldn’t matter and still let it bother me.
2. I’ve spent most of my life around horses and I still sometimes walk into a horse show and immediately feel like everyone else belongs there more than I do.
3. I’m trying so hard to stop this, but I still feel like I have to overload my plate, overcommit, & overperform to prove my value to other people. Which leaves me overwhelmed and exhausted.
4. I’m much better at showing up when someone else is counting on me than when the only person I’m accountable to is myself.
5. I’m not good at managing my own finances. I’ve managed huge production budgets down to the smallest detail, but can avoid looking at my own bank account, bookkeeping or taxes.
6. I get lonely working from home and riding mostly on my own, but I’m also terrible at keeping up with friends and desperately want to be left alone when I’m overwhelmed.
7. I sometimes look at other people’s careers and wonder what mine would look like if I’d made different choices earlier.
8. I hate how much external validation can affect me. A compliment from someone I respect can make my entire day. Feeling dismissed can ruin it.
9. I sometimes say I’m overwhelmed when, if I’m being completely truthful with myself, I’m avoiding something because I’m scared.
10. I still have really big goals for my riding, my career and my life. And sometimes I worry I’ve left myself too little time to do all of it.
I think one of the strangest things about getting older is realizing you don’t suddenly become the person who has everything figured out.
There are things about myself I’m really proud of now. There are things I’m still working on. And apparently there are things I thought I’d have outgrown by 39 that are very much still here.
If any of this feels familiar, follow along. I’m figuring out what I want the next chapter of my life, career & riding to look like in real time.

knew how to ride.
I did not know how much there was to learn once I became the person responsible for everything.
Suddenly I was learning about feed, saddle fit, farriers, vet calls, pasture management, injuries, behavior, trailers… and making decisions for an animal that can’t exactly tell me what’s wrong.
And maybe the biggest surprise: you never really feel like you’ve “learned horses.”
The more I learn, the more questions I have.
But I think that’s become one of my favorite parts of owning them. 🐴

I’ll never cease to be amazed by the majestic, but oh-so-sensitive, creatures we choose to love. 🐴❤️
With changing temperatures, the shift in seasons and sudden rainfall, we may start to see an increase in cases of colic.
🌱 Be mindful of sudden changes in routine
🌧️ Take care with turnout onto suddenly rich pasture
🍽️ Keep an eye on appetite and droppings
Remember, colic doesn’t always look dramatic. It can be as subtle as being a little quieter than usual or going off their food, or as obvious as rolling, pawing and extreme agitation.
If you think your horse is showing signs of colic, always give your vet a call. Early veterinary intervention can make a huge difference. 🩺

Horse money is a whole different envelope than other money. And when I pull cash out to pay for hay, it’s almost like it’s free because it’s not on the card statement, right? Right…? 😂
