Framing the fashions and the moments that defined 20th century visual culture - the annals of Fashion Photography provide an alluring almanac for the visual artist to study and learn about. Often black and white, immediate, captivating and evocative - classic fashion photography played its role in the changing landscape of publishing and an era in which fashion illustration became increasingly overlooked.
But what photography took away from illustratros, it eventually gave back. Providing an opportunity for artists to reference the human form and latest fashions from the comfort and convenience of the studio - photography and illustration are now inseperably intertwined. But learning the lessons of the masters of fashion photography inovles more than copying. The astute illustrator pays homage to the icons - drawing from these images to deconstruct and understand the visual narratives, compositions and moods.

Woody Hegedus aka WoodyIsDrawing founded Dropdead Gorgeous Drawing to share his love of fashion illustration and drawing.
A devotee of ink drawing, Woody currently focuses on live sketching people in busy urban environments but returns to the studio knowing that the rich history of fashion photography has much to teach us about creating striking and compelling images.

I had the pleasure of attending SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion and Film in Atlanta to visit both “Madame Grès: Art of Draping” and “Horst P Horst: Essence of the Times” exhibitions. Madame Grès’ draped gowns were absolutely breathtaking- the draped and pleated details of the garments, cut with exact precision were unmatched and what makes her one of the most celebrated haute couturiers.
Horst P. Horst is one of the most influential photographers in the 20th century as he is mostly known for his fashion photography. His first Vogue cover was shot in 1935 and thereafter he became photographer-in-chief. He has captured fashion designers such as Calvin Klein, Valentino, Halton, Karl Lagerfeld, Chanel, Diane Von Furstenberg, and Elsa Schiaparelli.

Een aantal maanden geleden heb ik namens het social media team van IPA Nederland
meegelopen met @politiehorst / @wijkagenten_horst_peel_en_maas .🤳🏼🚔
Tijdens een 9 uur durende OvD-P dienst heb ik @lars_hbrs mogen volgen tijdens zijn werkzaamheden. Vrij kort na aanvang dienst werden wij samen met verschillende collega’s gestuurd naar een zeer ernstige aanrijding.🚑
Één van de slachtoffers van deze aanrijding is, ondanks alle medische hulp, op locatie overleden aan haar verwondingen. Doordat ik dienst had met Lars als OVD-P, heb ik het hele proces rondom de aanrijding van dichtbij mee mogen maken.
Zo heb ik ook samen met Lars de nabestaanden bezocht om hen het slechte nieuws te vertellen. Dit was zeer indrukwekkend om mee te maken! Uit respect naar het slachtoffer en de nabestaanden, heb ik uiteraard maar een klein deel van de dag via social media in beeld gebracht. (En nu samengevoegd in een #reels. 🎥)
