Blow Their Mind // I’ve been teaching for nearly 10 years and have certain things that I do that blow the minds of other teachers.
1 - I work my contract hours. Very rarely do I stay late - if I do, it’s for staff meetings or for meetings that I get paid for the extra time. My time is precious, I don’t work for free.
2 - I don’t grade at home. Mainly because my kids would draw all over the work, but also, my time is precious. I’ll grade it within a week of turn in, it’ll be okay.
3 - I plan by unit, which usually means I know what I’m teaching (and when) for the next month or two. Backwards planning is my friend!
4 - I dedicate time to independent reading. Our district has early release days every week and those days are DEAR days in my class (Drop Everything And Read). When I first shared with teachers, they were shocked - “just reading?!” Yup - and the kids come to look forward and love those days. A great way to promote reading 🙌🏻
5 - I don’t ask for pencils back. Yes, I go through hundreds of pencils a year. But I don’t ask for them back because if they don’t have a pencil in my class, they probably don’t have one for another class.
One thing I always prep at the beginning of the school year? Birthday cups for each student! It makes it so much easier when they are all ready to go for the entire year and I can grab one when it is a student birthday. 🎉
And every student loves them! I’ve made them for 1st graders and 4th graders, and they love seeing on their desk when they come into the classroom the morning of their birthday.
Comment BIRTHDAY and I’ll send you the links to what I include in each one!🎉🎉

Every teacher duo has one of each.
The color-coded, perfectly organized teacher… and the teacher whose stuff is randomly placed but knows exactly where everything is.
Different styles, same classroom magic. ❤️

The Culture Code has a section on Gregg Popovich’s team dinners. It’s the thing his players still bring up decades after they stopped playing for him. The dinners.
I couldn’t stop thinking about how to do that version of it in a fourth/fifth grade classroom.
So: tablecloths, tea lights, flowers in vases, gold napkins, and a bin full of bow ties, tiaras and mustaches. Same cafeteria food. Completely different experience.
Robin Dunbar’s research found people who eat socially more often report being happier, feeling more embedded in their community, and having more friends they can rely on. Eating together does something to us that talking about community never will.
Steal it. 🎩🎩🎩🩵🩵🩵
