Snippets // Bob Wills (S3:E5) Born the first of 10 children to poor sharecropping farmers, James Robert Wills - better known as Bob Wills came into the world on March 6, 1905 in Kosse, Texas. From the git-go Wills grew up under influences that would be evident his entire life. First, his music always reflected the Western world he grew up in. There’s dust and dance halls in every bar of his music. Second, the fiddle was key to his sound, popular on the frontier because it was easy to carry on horseback. Aside from the human voice, the Texas fiddle was the first sound Bob ever heard. Both grandfathers and several uncles played the fiddle, and his father John was a Texas state champion fiddler, known for his breakdown style - connected to Scottish Reels and English Square Dancing - which got people moving. In 1913, his family migrated to West Texas after years of hard conditions in Limestone county. Along the way, they stopped at cotton camps where Bob would work alongside black children, who knew labor songs. In the evenings, they all played music with a mixture of guitars, mandolins, fiddles and trumpets to entertain themselves and Bob learned their songs. He knew early on he wanted to be a musician. In regional fiddle championships, the finalists were often Bob, his father, and his father’s rival Eck Robertson, one of the first old-time musicians to be recorded. To help make ends meet, the family would play for dances and make tips all across East Texas and West Texas. His uncle John played country fiddle, and at around 8 years old Bob learned to play backing rhythm. When he played the fiddle, Wills was forced to use all of the bow - not just the upper end as breakdown fiddlers do- and he developed a longbow technique because he was so small. Erntezeit im Apfelhof. Diese Woche haben wir die vollreifen, knackigen und super leckeren #idared geerntet. Die ganze Familie war dabei und es hat richtig Spss gemacht. Der Idared hat wenig #Fruchtzucker und viel #vitaminc Er eigentlich sich auch hervorragend zum backen. Ein toller Allrounder. My take on the @annaandelizabeth version of Ida Red 🪕🏔️ We’re only a couplea days away from departing the New Brunswick Appalachians and I’m so sad. 😢 Still got a bit of rootin’ & tootin’ left in me but I wouldn’t be surprised if I would up laying down some roots here when I’m ready. We were able to film in the mountains by this beautiful old church 💛⛪️ Btw I live in this sweater now so pretty much everything I do will be in this sweater. #appalachianmusic #appalachia #clawhammerbanjo #clawhammer #oldtimemusic #idared #americanamusic #countryfolk #rootsmusic #bluegrass #deeringbanjos #canadianfolk

Part one of a three part series on thinning and summer pruning. Our apple crop looks good this season, with a nice, 3 week early crop. Our 2 fieldworkers and Clif have been getting after it and our Idared and Gravenstein apples are thinned. We still have a lot left, and we always hope to be finished thinning by mid July. With a heavy crop the work takes longer but it’s a good problem!
