"I Hate It Here" is the twenty-third track from The Anthology edition of American singer and songwriter Taylor Swift's eleventh studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, released on April 19, 2024 through Republic Records. “I Hate It Here” embodies a profound yearning for escape – whether literal or metaphorical. The song begins with a conversation that sets the tone of disillusionment, describing someone who appears to be a “poet trapped inside the body of a finance guy.” This metaphor suggests a conflict between one’s true desires and the roles imposed by society. The following reference to being “scared to go outside” and rejecting the idea of comfort as a construct further emphasizes an internal conflict and disillusionment with the external world. Taylor co-wrote and co-produced the song with her regular songwriting partner Aaron Dessner, who produced the majority of THE ANTHOLOGY, which is the second volume of THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT. Dessner, who is well-known for his work with the rock band The National and his work on Taylor’s folk-tinged albums folklore (2020) and evermore (2020), infuses “I Hate It Here” with different acoustic instruments and an intricate string arrangement. Right away, the song opens with a somber, stripped-back guitar melody, setting the stage for Taylor’s emotionally raw vocals. This limited instrumentation persists throughout the song, allowing the focus to remain on the starkness of the lyrics and her heartfelt delivery. . . . #ihateithere #thetorturedpoetsdepartment #thetorturedpoetsdepartmenttheanthology #taylorswiftedits #thelifeofashowgirl

Both The Lakes and I Hate It Here explore Taylor Swift’s desire to escape, but in contrasting ways: while The Lakes imagines a serene, poetic retreat from the pressures of life and fame, I Hate It Here confronts the raw frustration and suffocating discomfort that push her toward that escape, showing how longing for peace and the reality of entrapment exist side by side in her emotional landscape.
