The ‘I’M BORED’ Jar - FOR TEENS Here’s an activity that brings a bit of CALM, costs NOTHING and will OCCUPY your teens at home during half term… Write down some ACTIVITIES that your teen enjoys (or get them involved to write them down themselves) onto some bits of paper and then pop them into a jar! Then each day they can chose a note whenever they feel any sense of boredom…and crack on! The juggle of being a working parent during the school holidays has been immense over the years, but ideas like this have helped me overcome the ‘I’m bored’ moans from the kids whenever we haven’t been able to take them out! Like that’s the point right? Truth be told, almost weekly I tell my husband, IM BORED. He tells me to go through ny photos and get a quick reminder that my life isn’t boring. He usually wins. In an effort to decrease screen time we have ditched TV and devices in the week. That’s no tv no iPad at all. Weekends Kizzy will get two hours of iPad over the two days. With that said I try and make sure I give enough ideas for her to be busy. Drawing club is one of my favs we pick something and sit for an hour and just draw. Sometimes it ends in tears as I am an amazing artist 🤣🤣🤣🤣 no but really it’s a cheap activity. Add club, a presentation and talk about the work at the end and it’s more than the kids being told to just draw. The first two weeks of no iPad and tv was hard I’m not going to lie but I got organised and made sure that she had things to do when the all important “IM BORED” was being thrown at me. We never had iPad but when I was 8 I was playing outside with my mates playing knock down ginger so I have to be mindful that shit has changed and kids hang out with freinds online. Just because that is the case tho doesn’t mean she will be allowed to just hang out in a Roblox room because she can’t play outside. It just means I need to dig deep and provide small solutions. So far it’s working. Less attitude less tantrums and less back chat!
