Inking in Franklin Booth style. Here’s an old drawing of Mycroft Holmes (Sherlock Holmes older and smarter brother) that I did for a Sherlock Holmes society, BSI, few years back. Like Bernie Wrightson, I was inspired and influenced by the great Franklin Booth when I started doing ink illustrations. Franklin Booth ink style mimics engravings and gives the illusion of light and shadow using thick and thin lines laid down in precise patterns. Alright it’s #wipwednesday so it’s time for Part 2 inking Now we ink the front door and this is where things start to feel suspicious. I’m thickening the line weight around the frame first. Heavier lines pull focus. Lighter lines let details breathe. The Line weight is basically storytelling without words. And then… the eyes peeking through the crack in the door. Nothing dramatic. Just enough to make you question whether this place is actually ‘closed.’ The foliage, Organic shapes on top of hard mechanical forms that contrast in hoping makes everything feel older. Abandoned. Nature creeping back in. On the sides, I ink the pipes and panels. Lots of little bolts, warning labels, tiny mechanical decisions. The more specific the detail, the more believable the world feels…right!? And the deeper I go, the more this repair shop feels like it’s hiding something.
