Engineers have developed multi-level road interchange designs that allow vehicles to move in every direction without ever stopping at a traffic light. These systems work by separating traffic onto different road levels and routing turning vehicles away from the main flow before any conflict point is reached, so cars never have to cross directly in front of each other. The concept is sometimes called a continuous flow intersection, and studies show it can cut wait times by up to 40 percent compared to a traditional signalized intersection. Because left-turn movements are handled before the main crossing point, opposing lanes of traffic can move at the same time, which dramatically increases how many vehicles can pass through per hour. More complex multi-level versions of this idea take the principle even further by stacking road layers so that through traffic, turning traffic, and merging lanes never share the same space at all. The tradeoff is land and cost, which is why these designs are most common on high-volume highways rather than city streets. Media: unknown We do not own any of the content. “James Tonic – At The Time In New York” #JamesTonic #AtTheTimeInNewYork Some road designs look brilliant in an animation and still get rejected by real civil engineers, and the classic cloverleaf interchange is the textbook example. On paper, its looping ramps let every vehicle merge and turn without ever stopping at a traffic light, eliminating intersections entirely. In practice, engineers have moved away from it for decades because of three major flaws: its sweeping loop ramps demand an enormous amount of land, making it nearly impossible to fit into dense urban areas; the short distance between ramps forces cars merging in and merging out to "weave" through the same lane simultaneously, a maneuver that significantly increases driver workload and crash risk; and its tight curve radii limit capacity for large trucks and modern traffic volumes far beyond what cloverleafs were originally designed to handle. As a result, most transportation departments today favor alternatives like diamond interchanges or the newer, more targeted continuous-flow intersection (CFI) design, which solves the traffic-light problem differently, without the land and weaving penalties of a full cloverleaf.
