"It was 2016 when I saw Pintu for the 1st time. I was on my balcony; I thought, ‘He’s cute!’ We started talking & slowly, I fell for him.
So, a year later, when he texted me 'I love you,' my heart did a little somersault. But I was Christian, & he was Hindu. Our families would never agree.
But I couldn’t lose him. So in Nov 2017, I said, 'Let’s get married?' Neither practicality nor maturity guided us. It was funny—on our wedding day, we left our homes in separate autos, exchanged garlands, & then went back to our own homes. Our families didn’t know, but everything had changed—we were now husband & wife.
The next few years were spent chasing our dreams separately–completing our degrees, & finding a job. Finally, in 2021, he called me & said, ‘Come to Bhubaneshwar, I got a job.’ After 5 years of marriage, we were finally waking up next to each other.
But a year later, a phone call changed everything. My family wanted me to come home for my brother’s wedding. I was pregnant so I told everyone, ‘Chutti nahi hai.’ But when they weren’t ready to listen, I finally broke the news.
I still remember that night – Papa didn’t talk to me. Maa said, ‘How could you do this?’ I was scared, but Pintu took all the blame. That’s when they knew that their daughter had married a gem. And in May 2023, we welcomed our princess, Prisha. It felt like all our dreams came true! And then a year later, on our baby’s 1st birthday, we renewed our vows in front of our family…But the worst was yet to come…
That night, after we came back, I had a backache. We consulted a doctor who said it was lung cancer. I was completely broken, but Pintu said, 'You’ll be fine.' He held my hand during every chemo session; when I told him, 'I don’t want to die,’ he said, 'If our families couldn’t separate us, what is cancer?' And when I cried looking at the huge clumps of hair falling out, he said, 'Let’s go bald together.' And that’s what we did.
It’s been 2 months now. The hospital has become our home. The doctor says, 'We can’t guarantee if I will survive this or not.' But I know Pintu will make sure that I will. We promised each other eternity... I’m sure an illness won’t take me away from him."
