Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz met on the set of Bigas Luna’s Jamón, Jamón. Cruz was 17 and Bardem was 22. While they shared palpable on-screen chemistry, they remained just colleagues, pursuing different paths for the next 15 years.
They reunited to film Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona. The intense professional environment and a well-timed wrap party, reignited the connection they had felt years earlier.
After keeping their relationship largely out of the spotlight, they made their romance red-carpet official at the 2010 Goya Awards. Later that year, they married in a private ceremony in the Bahamas.
They have two children together: their son Leo and their daughter Luna.

Penélope Cruz was 18 years old when she filmed this. Her feature debut. She has spoken openly about how emotionally unprepared she was for the experience and how poorly she handled it at the time.
After filming she cut her hair short and avoided love scenes for years afterward. On the last day of shooting she was crying, convinced the film would end her career before it had even started.
She knew the script was brave and the crew were respectful. But knowing something is a good opportunity and being ready for it are two very different things.
That same film earned her a Goya Award nomination. She went on to win an Academy Award. One of Spain’s most respected actors in cinema.
