Jenson Button. 2011 Canadian Grand Prix. Six pit stops. A drive-through penalty. Four hours in the rain. Last to first on the final lap past Sebastian Vettel. This race is genuinely one of the best F1 overtakes ever and if you haven't watched the full thing you are doing yourself a disservice. The fact that this race also created the four-hour time limit rule is just the cherry on top. Absolute cinema. #JensonButton #F1
Jenson Button debuted in Formula One in 2000 with Williams as the grid's youngest driver at age 20, scoring points immediately and finishing eighth overall despite inexperience. He moved to Benetton (later Renault), where results were inconsistent amid uncompetitive cars, before joining BAR in 2003. There he showed real promise, claiming multiple podiums and third in the 2004 championship with Honda power, yet endured 113 races without a win through 2005's regulatory struggles.
His breakthrough came in 2006 with Honda, securing his maiden victory at the rain-hit Hungarian Grand Prix from 14th on the grid. Honda faltered in 2007-08, but the team became Brawn GP in 2009. Button dominated early, winning six of the first seven races with the innovative double-diffuser car, then clinched his only World Championship at the Brazilian GP with 95 points, also helping Brawn take the constructors' title.
Button retired from full-time F1 after 2016 with McLaren, later winning Japan's Super GT title in 2018 and competing in WEC, Le Mans, NASCAR, and more. He retired from professional racing at the end of 2025 following his Cadillac WEC season, but in 2026 became Aston Martin F1 ambassador while enjoying historic racing and Sky Sports punditry.

After winning the 2009 Formula 1 World Championship with Brawn GP, Jenson Button made a bold move by joining McLaren in 2010, partnering fellow Brit and 2008 champion Lewis Hamilton. Many expected the pairing to be tense, but Button quickly proved he belonged at the front, winning the 2010 Australian Grand Prix and later the Chinese Grand Prix in the McLaren MP4-25. Over his 2010ā2016 stint with the team, Button scored 8 Grand Prix victories and consistently fought near the top of the championship, with his standout season coming in 2011, when he finished runner-up in the Driversā Championship behind Sebastian Vettel. ļæ¼
Buttonās time at McLaren became known for his smooth driving style and incredible racecraft, particularly in tricky conditions. One of the most famous moments came at the 2011 Canadian Grand Prix, where he recovered from multiple incidents and penalties in a chaotic rain-soaked race to take victory on the final lap. Alongside Hamilton, the pair formed one of the most competitive teammate lineups of the era, often pushing each other to the limit while keeping the team consistently fighting near the front. Even as McLaren struggled in the later Honda-powered years (2015ā2016), Button remained one of the sportās most respected drivers, closing his McLaren chapter as a fan favourite and one of the teamās most reliable racers of the modern era.

F1 IS NEARLY BACK š
With Formula One back this week, I couldnāt resist posting this. It feels like a massive part of my life has been missing over the last three months, and Iām really looking forward to seeing the cars back on track again.
This is Jenson Button qualifying at Albert Park in 2006, and I remember this lap clearly. At the time, I didnāt expect him to be on the pace at all, so this run really gave me a false sense of security that Honda might have the quickest car that year.
Of course, it was a low-fuel run, and the reality came pretty quickly. His engine failed spectacularly as he exited the final corner on the last lap in the race, resulting in a DNF.
All wasnāt lost though. Jenson went on to claim his maiden victory later that season at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The Canadian Grand Prix 2011 lasted over four hours, making it the longest race in F1 history. Rain, six safety cars, and constant disruptions made strategy critical.
Jenson Button recovered from last place after multiple setbacks.
Sebastian Vettel led most of the race but made a late mistake, allowing Button to take the win on the final lap.

Jenson Button explains how Brawn GP rose from the ashes of Honda's exit to dominate Formula 1. Knowing they had a "fantastic" car base, the team pushed through uncertainty to win the first six races of 2009.

During the closing moments of the 2010 Canadian Grand Prix, Jenson Button pulled off one of the most clever pieces of race awareness in modern Formula One. Late in the race, Button had received a warning for speeding under the safety car while driving for McLaren. If the stewards issued the penalty before the race finished, it would be applied to the race result. But if it was applied after the checkered flag, the punishment could become a 10-place grid penalty for the next race instead.
Realizing this, Button approached the finish line with the field already settled and deliberately slowed his car just before crossing it. For a few seconds he waited, creeping toward the line and buying precious time while officials reviewed the incident. The delay meant the penalty decision came only after the race had officially concluded. Because of that tiny pause before the finish line, the penalty could no longer affect the race result itself. Instead, it was converted into the grid drop for the following Grand Prix.
