Full story: I was in Phuket when I met a solo traveler at my hostel, let’s call him Aman. He was excited to try jet skiing, something most tourists do there. The cost was around 2500–3000 baht for 30 minutes, depending on the jet ski you choose. Before riding, the operators warn you that if there’s any scratch or dent after the ride, you’ll have to pay for it. The mistake here was that Aman didn’t take proper photos or a video of the jet ski before riding. After his ride ended, the operators suddenly showed him dents and claimed they were caused by him. Aman insisted the dents weren’t there earlier, but without proof, it was his word against theirs. They demanded 10,000 baht for the damage. When he argued that such a repair would only cost 200–400 baht, they responded by saying the repair would take three days, which would cost them three days of tourism. Surrounded by 10–15 people from the same jet ski company, under pressure and fear in a foreign country, he ended up paying the amount. Later, we found out this is a known jet ski scam in Thailand, and he could have gone to the Tourist Police for help. Unfortunately, by then, the damage was already done. Sharing this so you don’t learn the hard way. Always take photos and videos before jet skiing… or skip it altogether.
