Where is the head of Saint John the Baptist? ☦️ As an Orthodox Christian, I deeply venerate the holy relics of our faith, especially the precious head of Saint John the Baptist. The story of its discovery is not simple – there were three known findings, and it is still not fully understood. Italy, France, Syria, Greece, Armenia – each of these countries claims to possess a part of this sacred relic. The significance of John the Baptist for the faithful has always been immense. After the Most Holy Theotokos, he is one of the saints with the greatest number of church feasts, and his birth and life are specially highlighted in the Holy Gospel. His relics, and especially his head, have always been considered extremely important, which is why all three findings of his head are celebrated in the Church. Although different parts are kept in several locations – the Monastery of Saint Sylvester in Rome, the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, Nagorno-Karabakh in Armenia, and Mount Athos – the most probable location of the front part of the head is the Cathedral of Our Lady in Amiens, France. Only here has thorough research been conducted confirming the authenticity of the relic. The front part of the head is ancient, the face of Mediterranean type, and the person was between 25 and 40 years old. A clear trace of a knife blow is visible on the head, reminding us of Saint John’s martyrdom under Herodias. It is also known that through prayers before this relic, the city of Amiens was miraculously saved from the plague in the 17th century. Throughout history, the head was hidden and transferred from Comana to Constantinople, and then to Amiens, where it became an object of veneration and prayer.
