Prune Japanese Maples before the spring growth starts or after when the leaves have fully opened. Use some string now when it is easy to see the stems then you will easily know what to cut when the leaves are fully opened.

Weeping Japanese maple should be pruned after they have been in that location in the ground for three whole years. We prune in late winter before the spring growth starts and those leaf buds start pushing out.
I needed to do a lot of pruning on this because it was the first time my tree was pruned. I uploaded the full video on my youtube page. Click the link in my bio.

A common misinformation that is passed around is that you shouldn't prune more than 30% of any tree or it will die. That is not true. The 30% rule stems from a handful of delicate species. This rule is often taught because it can be applied to EVERY species. Maples can handle heavy pruning and it grows back in even stronger after a proper prune.

Japanese Maple Care Tips 🍁
A proper trim keeps your Japanese maple healthy, balanced, and looking its best. Here’s what I focus on:
• Remove dead or damaged branches first
• Thin out old growth to improve airflow
• Cut back crossing branches to keep a clean shape
• Always step back and trim with intention — less is more
• Clean up around the base to let the tree breathe
Small, thoughtful cuts make a big difference over time.

Sometimes it’s just a little too much growth in the wrong places. Here, I’m removing last year’s growth to restore that natural, flowing shape and keep the tree healthy.

Just posted a spring pruning video on one of my favourite trees to work on 🌸 the weeping Japanese maple (Acer palmatum).
Spring is the perfect time to focus on a detailed clean before the big flush of growth. In this case, the tree had a lot of dead weight, so this was a pretty big cleanup. Here’s the pruning order I walk through in the video:
First → remove dead, damaged, and diseased wood
Then → clean out old leaves and debris
Next → eliminate rubbing and crossing branches
Finally → shape for form and function
Because this variety is weeping, the goal is to protect that cascading shape. That means removing any new upright shoots trying to grow straight up and carefully thinning the canopy so when it leafs out, you can still see that stunning branch structure and bark underneath.
A few quick Japanese maple tips 🌿
• Airflow is everything (helps prevent disease)
• Think “sculpting,” not “cutting”
• Preserve the natural shape instead of forcing size reduction
• Good pruning now sets the structure for the whole season
If you love ornamental trees, this one’s a must-watch ✂️🌳

Just like other Japanese maple trees, the Emperor One Japanese Maple tree can't survive in full sun in California. It needs afternoon shade during the hottest time of day and month. Otherwise, its leaves will scorch.
