Our 2025 Kitchen Renovation Mistakes: •Discuss non-negotiables from the beginning. (We wanted the trash pull-out in the island, but plans were drawn on it being to the left of the sink, under assumption. We chose to live with it after realizing the domino effect that the change would have!) •Purchase appliances first (for a later delivery) or at least know exactly what you want and where. A spec sheet is KEY. (Our change to a 48 inch range threw off the symmetry on this wall and caused us to completely start from scratch on the layout!) •Speaking of “scratch”.. Delivery teams love to rip all that protective tape off the appliances, but ask them not to! Wait until you are using it. Scratches happen left and right while people are still in and out toward the end. •Ensure every. single. slab. is sealed properly, even the backsplash if you’re choosing to carry it up the back. (The fabricator should be on top of this but double check before you decide to sear steaks on your stove top! 🙈) •Give your cabinet maker your entire wish list from the beginning, down to the smallest detail aka what you would like to store in each drawer or cabinet. Helps determine shelving depth, height, and placement! •Never assume, always double, triple check! I really wanted the ends of our kitchen island to feel like a high-end feature, not an afterthought — so here’s all the details on exactly how I created the look 🤎 • I used solid oak corner posts sourced from a local timber merchant (you can also find lots of online suppliers, if you search: “stop chamfered newel posts”). Mine were 900mm high and 90mm wide. • I sourced my own ogee oak skirting, as @diykitchens didn’t offer oak skirting. It’s 14.6cm high. • I ordered two Helmsley combination door sets (size 735mm x 597mm) supplied separately and undrilled, sized to suit our island depth (ours is 1.4m including the overhang). Then you can get your fitter to fit these on to the ends. • If you are having an overhang for the seating like me, then you will also need 2 x base end panels (600x900) to cover the inner parts of the island. • Because we had the space, I actually turned the ends into 10cm deep cupboards — so, the doors actually open with a push to open latch. This was done using two 720 x 600mm stowaway units at each end (you’ll need to order carcass material for the shelves and MFC sheets for the back, if you do this). Wow that was a lot! It really is minefield! One thing we always talk about with clients is how much vertical storage they need. We just spent 3 months in a rental that had 6 inches of vertical storage. Enough for about 4 trays or cookie sheets or cutting boards. I think we have about 90” running inches of storage in my own kitchen and things are quite tight.
