Midnight blue rope dog collar, hand whipped in Carolina blue and red. This is a custom order, so the colours are the owner’s choice rather than mine. Whipping is traditionally how a sailor binds a rope end so it cannot fray, and every turn here is pulled by hand, hence the tattered gloves. Celtic knots were more than decoration. In Celtic and later Insular art, intricate knotwork appeared on manuscripts, stone crosses, jewelry and sacred objects. Today, their continuous forms are often interpreted as symbols of connection, continuity, protection and the cycles of life - life and death, nature and spirit, past and future. But here’s something many people don’t know: there is no ancient “dictionary” of Celtic knots telling us exactly what every pattern meant. Many of the meanings we associate with individual knots today were developed much later.
