This will also be my last Creature Teacher video for 2025. I can’t thank you all enough for the amount support you’ve shown me this last year, it’s been unbelievable. I’ll be making a video or post soon to say this properly, but for now thank you all so much, Ngā mihi! ❤️

While adult korimako/bellbirds mostly feed on nectar and berries. Chicks like the hungry mouths seen here are fed almost entirely with invertebrates. These wriggly snacks are high in protein for their growing bodies.
Look out for freshly fledged chicks all through the forest at the moment, they will often beg for food from their parent and make a sharper less melodious sound.

Highlight of my day! Two beautiful Korimako visitors 🖤
Nectar eating birds : Tūī , Korimako and tauhou (tui, bellbird and waxeye) enjoy sugar water when nectar flowering trees are in short supply.
I use a sugar to water ratio of 1:8. Anything higher attract bees and wasps, and might ferment quicker.
Cleaning of feeders is important every couple of days to remove leaf litter, poo, and to reduce the risk of transmitting disease ✌️

Korimako | Best Impromptu Speech. Full kōrero on MĀORI+
Caught in the act, a korimako/bellbird swiftly sips from one of our supplementary feeders meant for hihi/stitchbirds in the sanctuary.
Want to attract native manu/birds at home? While nectar feeders at home aren’t advised, consider planting native species like kōwhai, tī kōuka/cabbage tree, or harakeke/flax to attract local wildlife like kākā and tūī 🌿
Note: We kindly ask that you avoid approaching our feeders too closely. For the best experience in observing these wonderful species, we recommend taking a seat on one of the nearby benches. Simply relax and enjoy watching as they visit the feeders and take flight when they’re ready.

We were super lucky today at #natureschool to get up close to two #korimako ; they were singing, jumping around and 'mating' according to ngā ākonga.
We love hearing the beautiful Korimako (Bellbird) serenade us with its melodious tune 🎶 Have a wonderful week!

Korimako / New Zealand Bellbird at the Sinclair Wetlands near Dunedin, NZ. Korimako have dialects and it's been a pleasure to hear their differences as I travel around the South Island. This one was kind enough to grace me with a close-up performance 🥰 I've never heard the beak clacks so clearly before!
