Because my availability is now much more limited, I highly recommend planning ahead when it’s time for your new service, touch-up or refresh. Austin lost a lot of places over the years that people swore they’d never get over. Shady Grove was one of them. It opened in 1992, became one of those places that just felt very Austin, and then closed in 2020. Now it’s kind of back. A Little Shady just opened in Kyle, and they didn’t just slap the old name on a new restaurant and call it a day. They brought back some of the food people actually remember, including the green chile cheese fries, hippie sandwich and tortilla fried queso catfish. And the whole place feels like somebody went digging through old Austin and started decorating. There’s a 70s basement vibe, an old-school kitchen setup, and even the original 1954 Gulf Airstream from Shady Grove sitting outside. I love when somebody brings back a nostalgic place without trying to turn it into some weird museum version of itself. You can still go eat, hang out and make new memories there.
