Kype refers to the hooked jaw that develops on male trout during the spawning season. It’s a characteristic physical change, and it’s associated with the fish’s breeding behavior. It allows the males to battle over spawning positions. Some trout seem to have longer hooked jaws than others. That is from the hooked jaws not entirely disappearing from the fish after the spawning season. The surviving fish will grow the hooked jaw again, thus just adding to the length of what didn’t entirely disappear to begin with. Ironically this tiger trout has a kype even though they can’t spawn. Tiger trout are sterile. They still go through the color and physical changes just like brown and brook trout though. Another little secret about tiger trout, they don’t really like bugs. They prefer something moving. So you can get them with a dry fly that’s moving, or a streamer or euro jig, but a dead drifting nymph is most likely a waste of your time. #tigertrout #kype #flyfishdelawhere #troutfly #fishing #flyfishing #trout #spawning

Beautiful male rainbow trout! This particular pool had quite a few fish hanging around. The current was decently strong in spots so it made it a bit of a challenge to get in good positions. I had fun trying to overcome the challenges to get a few shots of these fish. #rainbowtrout #steelhead #princeedwardisland #eastcoast #trout #troutfishing #flyfishing #onthefly #troutbum #kype

Was a great weekend chasing salmonids in western Maine! Water was high and cold, exactly what these fish need to make the next generation! Keep the rain coming I say! Swinging wet flies (my turkey tom landed this fella) was the answer. Tons of caddis hatching, if you see bugs, use bugs!

I'm that weirdo that's been wishing my year away just so that I could get back on the ice again.
I was supposed to be hunting yesterday but when we got the invite from @dingman.22 to go catch some trout, I just couldn't pass it up. Everytime someone's @jawjacker went off I jumped with excitement. Everyone was right there helping land fish, take photos and videos and cheer each other on.
Making sure everyone landed a fish yesterday was a priority and I honestly love that. It wasn't about landing the most fish or the biggest fish, it was just about getting on the ice, enjoying the moment and dusting off the ice fishing cobwebs.
It was the perfect kick off to what should be a pretty epic ice fishing season. Thanks for a great day team!!!
