Multi-frame animation from the #NixonFire showing the Quick Reaction Force helicopters flying over the blaze at night. The QRF is a series of Chinook heavy lift helicopters deployed across Southern California that are capable of dropping thousands of gallons of water at night to aid in fire suppression.
They are an important tool in areas of the WUI, or Wildand Urban Interface, as they allow near-pinpoint delivery of water drops when fires are usually less active overnight. This gives crews the chance to increase containment or have a better chance of protecting structures. The “ships” as helicopters are sometimes referred to in the fire world, are a collaboration between Los Angeles County Fire, the Orange County Fire Authority, and Ventura County Fire and Southern California Edison.
I’ve previously been on training flights for other night-capable water dropping helicopters, and to see the pilots coordinate with ground resources and fly in the darkness with night vision goggles is a sight to behold. It’s a combination of modern technology, proactive firefighting, and good old-fashioned communication/teamwork. I watched the two-engine large helicopters do a dance from a water source in Anza to the fire, shuttling tens of thousands of gallons of water back and forth. In my perspective, it’s one of the best tools for minimizing structure loss in the state.

Ocean Lifeguard Academy 39 Update:
For context, these candidates are moving into week 3 of Academy, but their journey in becoming Los Angeles County Ocean Lifeguards, began back in July of 2022 when we initially opened up the application process. All accepted applicants then took an exam evaluating their training and experience, followed by a 1,000 meter ocean swim competing for a few highly coveted spots to be considered for the Academy. After additional physical examinations and thorough background checks, 55 candidates were invited to become members of the 39th Ocean Lifeguard Academy consisting of 6 consecutive weekends that start early in the morning and go well into the evening. There they are put through all components of what it takes to become an ocean lifeguard for the @lacolifeguards including an extensive classroom curriculum, testing, skills-based curriculum, plenty of fitness and daily competitive events. Not all candidates make it through the Academy, but for those who do, they receive the great privilege of becoming an ocean lifeguard for the busiest lifeguard service in the world, with 72 miles of coastline and over 42 million in beach attendance annually. They are also immediately moved into recurrent status making them eligible for a Summer schedule providing a minimum of 40 hours per week.
The road is not for all, but it is for some. It is reserved for those who are willing to put in the work and give back to something greater than themself. Continue to follow along and stay up to date on Academy 39’s progress and if you have interest in following a similar path and working for the Los Angeles County Fire Department Lifeguard Division feel free to visit the link in our bio.
