Korea’s Mother-of-Pearl Lacquerware: Light Sealed Inside Darkness
This is not just furniture. Korea’s najeonchilgi, or mother-of-pearl lacquerware, transforms seashells, wood, and natural lacquer into glowing works of art. From ancient lacquer traditions to the refined craft of the Goryeo dynasty and the beloved jagaejang cabinets of Korean homes, this documentary short reveals how Korean artisans turned ocean light into symbols of family, memory, prosperity, and beauty. A living tradition, still shining by hand.

Six Gourds, One Wish
Six gourds drift across an exceptionally beautiful, jade-like blue-green ground—a color rarely encountered in maki-e.
In Japanese, six gourds, mubyō (六瓢), echo the word mubyō (無病), meaning “free from illness.” The motif has long symbolized good health, longevity, and harmony within the family.
Each gourd is exquisitely decorated with taka maki-e, aogai mother-of-pearl, and kirikane. The interior is equally refined, finished in silver with scattered gold hirame.
A superb work that brings together the elegance and meticulous craftsmanship of Kaga maki-e.

Between Two Eras
Some works do not simply belong to a period—they preserve the very moment when one age quietly gave way to another.

Ajiro-ground Maki-e Kiseruzutsu (pipe case) with Rimpa-style autumn grass design
By Ikeda Taishin (1825–1903)
Meiji Period
W214 × D30 × H19 mm|37 g
—
A leading lacquer artist of the Meiji era, Ikeda Taishin inherited the decorative spirit of the Edo period while embracing a new pursuit of natural realism.
The composition reflects the bold asymmetry and generous negative space of the Rinpa tradition, allowing the design to breathe with remarkable elegance. Mother-of-pearl leaves are intentionally stylized, while finely rendered autumn grasses reveal an almost lifelike precision—a dialogue between ornament and observation.
This pipe case also tells the story of a changing Japan. Once worn at the waist as a practical personal accessory during the Edo period, kiseruzutsu gradually lost their everyday function as Western clothing became common in the Meiji era. They evolved from functional objects into works created to be admired in the hand.
Few objects capture this transition so gracefully. It stands as a quiet witness to the moment when Japanese craftsmanship began its transformation from utility into fine art.

Crafting a Traditional Mother-of-Pearl Inlay Jewelry Box
🔺Description:
The maker gently cleans and inspects luminous raw shells before sawing, shaping, and setting the lustrous fragments onto the wooden casket with seamless precision. Using traditional plant fibers to meticulously polish the surface, she blends the inlaid nacre flush with the grain, sweeping away residue to unveil a radiant, iridescent sheen. Each reflective blossom and perched magpie pays homage to an art form dating back to the Western Zhou dynasty—a poetic celebration of enduring Chinese craftsmanship and classical slow living.

Why does lacquer make a space feel instantly more luxurious? 🪶
Lacquer has a history spanning around 7000 years, yet its rich, glossy finish still feels remarkably contemporary.
Deep colours, reflective surfaces, almost mirror-like. There’s something about lacquer that feels refined without being excessive, and luxurious without relying on ornament.
Rich and deep. Traditional and contemporary.
Why it works — lacquer.

・Lacquerware artist
Soichiro Nakamuro is a lacquerware artist.
Wajima lacquerware (a.k.a. Wajima nuri) is made in the city of Wajima, Ishikawa prefecture.
The most notable features of Wajima lacquerware are not only its beautiful finish but also the high quality tableware.
The main distinguishing feature of Wajima lacquerware is the durable undercoating achieved by the applying multiple layers of urushi mixed with powdered diatomaceous soil (ji-no-ko).
Wajima lacquerware uses decorating techniques like filling carved areas with gold/silver powder to create maki-e.
These graceful gold and silver designs are eye-catching.
It is a durable product that goes through over a hundred stages of production.
Therefore it is not only an appealing product with durability but it is also restorable if damaged.
We look forward to his future activities.
