American Nathan Martin won the Los Angeles marathon by .001 seconds, the closest finish in race history.
The crazy part?
He wasn’t anywhere close to the lead with 5 miles to go.
“I made an actual move five miles out… when I saw no one else was picking up the pace. I decided I needed to push,” the 36-year-old said.
“At a mile and a half to go, I could see the leader and with 800 meters to go, I was thinking, ‘I’m catching him.’”
People get discouraged when they see others ahead of them, when they make mistakes, and when they suffer.
The truth is, you only lose if you quit. Don’t give up.

At the 2026 Los Angeles Marathon, most of the attention was on the elite runners, especially Kenya’s Michael Kamau, who led for the majority of the race.
Meanwhile, a 36-year-old substitute teacher from Michigan stayed just within reach… never leading, just holding on.
With around a mile to go, he finally had the leader in sight.
Then in the final stretch, everything changed.
A brief moment of confusion ahead slowed the frontrunner and suddenly, the gap started to close.
After 26.2 miles, it came down to a sprint.
Stride for stride, at the line… it was separated by 0.01 seconds - the closest finish in Los Angeles Marathon history.
Nathan Martin is the substitute teacher that won.
