Lamhe came out about 10 years after Kabhi Kabhi and over 20 years before Jab Tak, and it may not have gotten the kind of audience appreciation it deserved when it was released, but I think it is possibly his best film. At least, one of his best. By the time he made Lamhe, Yashji was no longer worried about appealing to a broad audience, or exploring “big issues”, he just wanted to tell a story that interested in him in an interesting way. In an interview with Karan Johar, Yash Chopra said that Lamhe is one of his most cherished films. Released in 1991, Lamhe did not do well at all the box office, though it was a commercial success overseas. In the interview, Yash Chopra says that he had this idea of Lamhe since Silsila; however, he waited till Chandni because he wanted the cushion of a hit film. On being criticized that film was much ahead of its time, he said if he cannot make it in the nineties, when will he make then. Sridevi was immediately mesmerized by Lamhe (1991) when Yash Chopra narrated it, passionately demanding to be in the film and offering bulk dates to ensure her participation. She considered it one of her finest, bravest performances, playing the dual roles of mother and daughter.
