When blending new words feels a bit high pressure, try this game.
You might remember the blending word game I shared the other day. Here’s how to make it work for beginner readers.
Write the words on magnetic tiles.
Add sound buttons under each sound.
Toss the pom-pom.
Where it lands…
your child presses the sound buttons, says the sounds and blends the word.
Read it.
Erase it.
Next turn.
Sound buttons help children see and hear each sound, which makes blending much easier. Turning it into a game makes practicing feel safe and fun, not high risk. 💖
My tip is to start with simple CVC words (sat, rat, mat, rip, sit), then adapt it for any sounds or spelling patterns they’re learning.
One simple game.
So many ways to build reading confidence.
Save this for later and share with a parent of a beginner reading. You can help your child learn to read!

This one was such a hit, and I love that it targeted fine motor skills, color matching, and cooperation in a fun, seasonal way. Thanks @educationalinsights !

✨I Spy✨
I play this game with my 3 year old too but just change the vocabulary, for him it might be something blue and for my 4 year old I extend it to something bumpy or smooth.L. Such a great way to build vocabulary!

Kids learn best when they don’t even realize they’re learning.
This quick game practices letter sounds, vocabulary, and quick thinking… but to kids it just feels like fun. As they get older, we’ll play more challenging categories.
This is the kind of learning I believe in.

Easy Learning Games for Toddlers 👶✨
• Color Sorting Game
Use colored cups, paper, or toys. Ask your toddler to match the same colors and say the color out loud while they play.
• Counting with Snacks
Use small snacks like cereal or crackers. Let your toddler count them one by one. Learning numbers while having a little treat makes it fun.
• Shape Hunt
Draw simple shapes like a circle, square, and triangle. Ask your toddler to find objects around the house that match the shapes.
• Memory Cup Game
Hide a small toy under one of 3–4 cups. Move the cups around slowly and ask your toddler to guess where the toy is. Great for memory and focus.
Simple play = big learning for little minds.

A 10/10 learning game I honestly didn’t expect my daughter to love this much. She kept asking to play it again and again and even her 8-year-old brother joined in (just with different words).
This is why I love learning through play. Games like this build phonics, sound recognition and early reading skills without it feeling like a lesson and when kids enjoy it, the learning sticks. 🤍
SAVE THIS AND DO GIVE IT A TRY.
One thing that can confuse children when they’re learning their letters is capital and lowercase forms.
They look different…
They appear in different places…
And sometimes they feel like two completely separate letters.
So instead of drilling it with worksheets, we turned it into a game called Up or Down.
I simply wrote a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters on a piece of paper and my son had to decide:
⬆️ Arrow up = uppercase
⬇️ Arrow down = lowercase
Simple… but surprisingly powerful.
Through play they are practising:
✨ letter recognition
✨ early reading skills
✨ pencil control
And because it feels like a game, they’ll actually want to do it.
These are exactly the types of quick, purposeful activities I include in the TeachEm Box - games that take minutes to set up but build real school readiness skills.
✨ Follow for simple play-based learning ideas.
📌 Save this if you want easy literacy games for home.
