The Most Tedious Cut in Leathercraft (Thumb Slots)
Cutting thumb slots always slows me down.
This clip is just 6–8 seconds, but it holds the most tedious part of building this minimalist leather wallet. I went with a soft, pliable yellow chrome tan for the interior pockets, paired against a dense, heavy full grain veg tan shell. Two completely different leathers fighting each other a little… but that contrast is what makes the piece.
I’m using an X-Acto knife with a 2 blade to cut each thumb slot by hand. I’ve tested slot punches, corner punches—everything that should make it faster—but unless the wallet is designed around those tools, they don’t line up right. One bad strike and the whole piece is gone. Learned that the hard way.
So I keep coming back to this—slow cuts, steady pressure, and a lot of focus. Not the fastest way, but the cleanest I’ve found for custom leather work.

The details most people never notice… but every maker does.
Beveling and burnishing the slit of the Stash Wallet. A small step that refines the edges, smooths the leather, and gives the piece a clean, premium finish.
And the sound? Even better.
Turn the volume on.

Leathercraft Tip: Why I Rough Up Leather Before Gluing (ASMR Wallet Build Process)
Before any stitching happens, there’s a quiet step that makes everything else easier.
In this part of the process, I’m using an exacto knife to lightly rough up the surface of the leather before applying Eco-Flo adhesive. It’s a small detail, but it makes a big difference when you’re building leather goods that need to line up perfectly.
When the surface is roughed up, the adhesive has something to grab onto. That helps the layers stick together long enough to keep everything aligned. Once the pieces are held in place, I can use the pricking irons to punch clean, consistent stitching holes through every layer.
Some people say glue isn’t necessary in leathercraft. And technically that’s true. But when you’re working with heavier 9 oz vegetable tanned leather and pairing it with softer 3.5 oz chrome tanned leather pockets, things can shift around quickly.
For me, a little adhesive makes the process more predictable. The layers stay where they should, the holes line up, and the stitching ends up cleaner.
It’s one of those small, quiet steps that no one really notices in the finished wallet… but it’s part of what makes the final product consistent every time.
