The Lemkos are an East Slavic ethnic group native to the Lemko Region of Carpathian Rus’, an ethnographic area in the Carpathian Mountains and foothills spanning parts of Ukraine, Slovakia, and Poland. Often regarded as a sub-group of the broader Rusyn people, the Lemkos possess a distinctive culture shaped by Carpathian highland traditions and Eastern Christian heritage, expressed through wooden tserkvas, intricate folk embroidery, and characteristic multipart singing. Historically, most Lemkos were Eastern Orthodox or Greek Catholic, though practice varied from village to village. They speak Lemko, a Rusyn variety related to West Ukrainian dialects and notable for its own phonetic and lexical features. “U hajičku, travičku ja žala” is a Carpatho-Rusin song from the Slovakian side of the Carpathian mountains. People from that region are known as Łemko or Rusini (Ruthenians). This is an unpretentious song about a girl’s love dream, told in a simple but charming manner. PL: “U hajičku, travičku ja žala” to pieśń od Słowackich Łemków o prostym i jednocześnie uroczym przekazie; to romantyczny sen o dziewczynie i chłopcu w ogrodzie. “Oy Vesna Krasna” in many Slavonic languages means “oh beautiful spring”. This debut album by Polish artist and musician Karolina Węgrzyn is a homage to her family’s traditions, but also a journey to connect the different cultures and minorities of Eastern Europe. Blending joyful and dynamic Balkan rhythms with a powerful and melancholic Northern Carpathian voice, Karolina and her eclectic band approach these songs with a deep respect, but also infuse with their own interpretations.
