Did you know that instant film could look this good?! 👀 Many people don’t realize that instant film is a sleeping giant. Often times associated with low quality snapshots meant to pin up on kitschy cork boards in college dorm rooms. However, instant film can give you surprising results if you’re willing to spend a little extra time and put some actual glass in front of it. What do you think, are the results worth the extra effort? - The device I’m using in this video is the Lomograflok sold by @lomography. It uses @fujifilm_instax_northamerica Instax Wide instant film and can be mounted on any large format camera using a Graflok mounting system. Can you use a light meter app if your camera’s meter stops working? I used my Canon AE-1 as a reference and compared its in-camera meter to a light meter app to see how close they really are. If you’re shooting film and your light meter isn’t working (or you just want a backup), this is a great option to know about. Cinematography Tip of the Day: Light & Color Meters💡🎨 Just because we are in the digital age does not mean you don’t need these tools. Shane uses his light meter to measure ratios and balance light. He also keeps a “book of light” and takes ratio readings after they’ve done a few takes of the scene and there aren’t anymore major lighting adjustments. He records those readings in his book of light so if they ever have to come back to the scene and do pick ups or match it, he has the exact ratios and can dial it in perfectly. The color temperature meter is also an essential and powerful tool for balancing HMI’s and matching sources. To match sources, you simply click “text” in the upper left corner and then you are in XY mode. Once you get the XY reading of the light, you would go into your light that at least has RGB white and you can out the X and the Y in and the light will match the source perfectly. This is huge! Today I’m showing you my new trichrome rig. It’s made from two Agfa Optima cameras and is therefore much more compact than my first setup. One of the cameras is loaded with regular color negative film, while the other uses infrared black and white film. Together, they allow me to take Aerochrome style photos like this one. The Agfa Optima cameras are ideal for this because they’re small, affordable, and have a filter thread with the light meter positioned inside that thread. This means the camera can meter light directly through the 720 nm filter mounted on the black and white infrared camera. Both cameras are held together by a small 3D printed part, and when I want to take a photo, I simply press both shutters at the same time. The two images can then be aligned and combined in Photoshop or during enlarging.
