Powdering your block keeps it dry and clean. I use French chalk to dry any excess ink that may remain on my woodblock after printing. Ink can begin to fill in the cracks of the woodcut which not only fills in the fine details, but can also make the wood wet which will break down over time. The powder dries out any ink that may go unseen helping to protect the wood itself. Additionally, the powder shows how the block will look when printed. The white flat powder contrasts well with the darker carving. This gives me a preview of the block without having to print. It’s a slow, satisfying start—and it makes all the difference. Night & Day Linocut 90 x 60cm Roughly 150 cutting hours, spaced out over a year. This piece evolved as I worked, in how I felt, like the changing of the seasons and similarly like night dawns into the day.
