Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 by Franz Liszt, performed by @khatiabuniatishvili. Composed in 1847, Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 is the most famous of Liszt’s 19 Hungarian Rhapsodies. Inspired by Hungarian folk traditions and the verbunkos style, the work contrasts a slow, expressive opening (Lassan) with a fast, virtuosic conclusion (Friska). Its brilliant octave passages, rapid scales, and dramatic shifts in tempo have made it one of the most recognizable piano works ever written. The piece has also become widely known outside the concert hall through its frequent appearances in films, television, and animated cartoons, introducing generations of listeners to Liszt’s music. #FranzLiszt #HungarianRhapsody #ClassicalMusic #Piano #KhatiaBuniatishvili

Say hello to my student Max!! 🤗 in this short clip, Max played “Liebestraum No. 3” by Liszt. This clip was taken a couple of days before our summer recital. Liebestraum No. 3 is one of the most beloved works in the piano repertoire, requiring not only technical control but also a deep sense of lyricism, voicing, and musical maturity. Now, in this clip, but even more so at our Summer Piano Recital, Max delivered a truly wonderful performance of this masterpiece. What impressed me most was the conviction with which he played. From the opening measures to the final cadence, Max demonstrated a natural musicality that allowed the melodies to sing beautifully above the accompaniment. He shaped phrases thoughtfully, paid close attention to the ebb and flow of the music, and brought out the expressive qualities that make this piece so captivating. His dynamic control, sensitivity to tone color, and ability to communicate emotion helped create a performance that was both engaging and memorable. As a teacher, it’s always rewarding to see a student move beyond simply playing the correct notes and begin telling a story through music. Max did exactly that. He performed Liebestraum No. 3 with confidence, artistry, and a level of musical understanding that made me incredibly proud. I am so proud of your hard work and dedication, and I can’t wait to begin exploring some new and exciting musical challenges with you in the months ahead. Bravo, Max!!
In 1849, Chopin lay dying in Paris, and across the music world that had spent years pitting him against Franz Liszt, the rivalry that once defined them both quietly dissolved. The two had been compared at every turn, two of the greatest pianists Europe had ever produced, each pushed to outdo the other in salons and concert halls. But there was no room for competition in a deathbed. What Liszt felt instead was something closer to losing a brother. In the months that followed, he did something he had never done before, setting aside his own unmistakable voice to write in Chopin’s style instead, borrowing the very language that had made his friend immortal. The result was Consolation No. 3, a piece that doesn’t sound like Liszt at all. It sounds like Chopin, written by the hand of the man who missed him, a quiet way of keeping a friend’s voice alive just a little longer after the world had gone silent around it. #classicalpianism #classicalmusic #liszt
