In 2017, my father danced “Hole Waimea” at Live Aloha. Nine years later, I had the honor and privilege of dancing the same mele at Live Aloha 2026.
“Hole Waimea” is a mele inoa, a name chant for our aliʻi, Kamehameha I. It also honors the spear fighters of Waimea, Hawaiʻi, who called themselves Kipuʻupuʻu, after the cold rains and harsh winds of their homeland. As part of their training, they traveled to the forests of Mahiki to make their spears, and it was there that they composed this chant in honor of their aliʻi.
This mele speaks to the strength, courage, and warrior spirit of those who came before us. Dancing this mele is not only a way for me to honor my aliʻi, but also my father.
He has been my provider, my protector, and one of my greatest examples of strength throughout my entire life—regardless of what life has thrown his way. To now have the opportunity to share the same mele he once danced is special.
I am beyond blessed and grateful to have shared “Hole Waimea” in this way, carrying with me the strength of our warriors, the legacy of our aliʻi, and the love and strength of my father. 🤎
