Moving abroad as an international student… no one really tells you what it actually feels like.
It’s not just new places, new people, or a better future.
It’s learning how to sit with silence, eating alone more than you expected, and calling home just to hear something familiar.
Some days you miss home.
Some days you feel like you’re finally building something.
Most days… it’s both at the same time.
You’re figuring out life in a different language, trying to understand how everything works, while also trying to understand yourself.
And maybe that’s the hardest part… you’re growing into someone new, while slowly feeling further away from who you used to be.
If you’re an international student… you know exactly what this feels like.
Follow along — we’re all figuring this out together. 🌍

Why did I host exchange students… and why should you?
Because my world was small — and hosting made it bigger. 🌍
Now I have family in Europe, South America, Asia, Africa, and Australia.
Hosting helped me appreciate other cultures… and value my own even more.
Instead of focusing on what’s wrong in the world, I chose to make a difference in one student’s life. And one student can impact so many others.
Not every American teen gets to travel — but when you host, the world comes to your home and your school.
It’s volunteering. It’s mentoring. It’s leaving a footprint that matters.
So… what’s stopping you?
Consider hosting an exchange student. Your family might grow in ways you never imagined.

Moving to a new country isn’t just about studying… it’s about learning how to belong.
The easiest way to adapt? Step out of your comfort zone. Talk to locals, be part of group projects, and join cultural clubs. The more you engage, the more the place starts feeling like home.

Culture shock isn’t dramatic — its Quiet, its Real 😞
Culture shock doesn’t always look dramatic.
It’s not crying at the airport.
It’s the small things.
Struggling with accents.
Feeling awkward in conversations.
Missing familiar food.
Not understanding social cues.
Feeling tired for no clear reason.
It’s subtle. It’s mental. And it’s real.
If you’re studying or working abroad, give yourself time.
Adjustment isn’t weakness.
It’s growth happening in real time.

hosting exchange students is one of the most rewarding things our family does… but the questions we get sometimes are wild 😂
people are curious, which i totally understand, but some of the things host families hear are honestly so unexpected. from “do you get paid?” to “can you just keep them if you like them?” we have heard it all.
for the record, hosting is about cultural exchange, connection, and welcoming a student into your family for a season. and yes… we absolutely get attached.
host families, what is the weirdest question someone has asked you about hosting an exchange student? i know there are some good ones 👇

Things I wish I knew... 💗
Every exchange student has a story. Hosting isn’t just giving a home, it’s sharing culture, making memories, and seeing the world through someone else’s eyes. 🌍
