The coolest thing I did in Scotland was visit my ancestral burial grounds. The Clan Macnab Burial ground is located on a small island in the middle of the River Dochart in Killin. Clan Macnab, meaning “child of the abbot,” is first mentioned in documented records from 1124 CE, making them one of the oldest clans in Scotland. Within the locked enclosure are 15 graves, including 9 chiefs, one of which is depicted by a West Highland effigy. The inscription states this grave belongs to Finlay Macnab who died in 1573. Above the enclosure are two 18th century stone busts representing the MacNeish’s severed heads. Outside the enclosure are a few more graves including that of Patrick Macnab dating back to 1777. #cemetery #headstones #cemeteries #cemeterylovers #cemeterywandering #taphophile #graveyard #historylovers #taphophiles_only #scotland #kirkyard #burialground #ancestral #ancestry #familyhistory #macnab #dochartfalls #killin #killinscotland #scottishclans #scotlandhistory #explorescotland #scotlandtravels #gravestones #cemeteryexplorer #genealogy

🚨Ontario - A Hamilton, Ontario resident who has played a key role in police investigations is now fighting a city order to remove his home security cameras. Dan Myles, who lives on MacNab Street North, has operated 10 outdoor surveillance cameras for the past seven years. The devices have provided critical footage in more than 40 police investigations, including three homicides, as well as home invasions, assaults, and break-ins. Despite their value to law enforcement, the City of Hamilton has ordered Myles to take the cameras down, citing a municipal fortification by-law that prohibits surveillance systems from capturing images beyond the owner’s property line. Myles has appealed the order, arguing that the cameras help keep his neighbourhood safe. He said most of his neighbours and a nearby church support the cameras, with only one resident objecting. City officials told him that an exemption could be granted if he provides signed consent from affected neighbours, a letter of support from his landlord, screenshots of the camera views, and related police reports to demonstrate their necessity. Myles maintains that he is willing to adjust his setup to respect privacy concerns, but he believes the cameras should remain given the role they have played in solving violent crimes in Hamilton. This is the Clan Macnab Burial ground on Innis Buidhe, a small island in the middle of the River Dochart at Killin. They're one of the oldest clans in Scotland, the name meaning Son of the Abbot and said to refer to one of the children of the first King of Scots from the mid 800s! That's the tradition passed down through oral stories, but the first chief we can easily date is Gilbert Macnab who was confirmed in a charter by David II in 1336. Their power spread around the mountains around Killin and Loch Tay, but they weren't the only clan in the area. To the south, based on an island in Loch Earn, were the smaller but very boisterous Clan Neish. Like most parts of Scotland, the two neighbours were constantly fighting each other, raiding homes and stealing cows, back and forward, like a violent national sport. Then, in the early 1500s, the Neishes overstretched themselves and were caught by the full force of the Macnabs. The fight that followed left Clan Neish a fraction of its previous size, but they felt safe enough to keep raiding their neighbours, protected by their island home. Around 100 years later, the Neishes once again went a little too far and the Macnabs decided to retaliate once and for all. The chief's son Smooth John and his men carried a boat across the hills from Loch Tay to Loch Earn and rowed out to surprise Clan Neish in their home. I won't go into too much detail about what happened after they caught their enemies sleeping, but that's the reason the badge of Clan Macnab shows the severed head of the last chief of Clan Neish... You'll see in on some of the gravestones on Innis Buidhe, with nine chiefs buried in the small enclosure, including one depicted by a West Highland Effigy. That's not something you often see outside of Argyll and the Isles! It's a small island and a short walk to get there, you'll find the locked gate leading off the big bridge over the Falls of Dochart. Head along to the Bridge End Mill and leave a deposit in return for the key. Don't forget to lock it when you leave and return the key or they'll be after your head! #Scotland #VisitScotland #ScotlandIsNow #Killin
Ward 14 is beaming with pride as we celebrate one of our own, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, on being named the NBA MVP for the 2024–25 season! Shai led the league in scoring with an impressive 32.7 points per game, showcasing not only his incredible talent but also his dedication and leadership on and off the court. A proud former resident of Ward 14, Shai's journey began at Regina Mundi Catholic Elementary School Elementary School, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander continued through St. Thomas More, and culminated with his graduation from Sir Allan MacNab High School. He then went on to play one standout season with the Kentucky Wildcats before being drafted 11th overall in the 2018 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Hornets, and traded that night to the Los Angeles Clippers. He is now a three-time NBA All-Star and two-time All-NBA First Team member. I had the pleasure of meeting Shai a few years ago at Peoples Church Hamilton. His kindness, and genuine nature left a lasting impression—he’s not just a world-class athlete, but a truly grounded individual. On behalf of Ward 14, congratulations Shai! Your hometown is incredibly proud of you. We can’t wait to see what you do next!
