the Pacific madrone, also called, arbutus, madrone, madroña, Oregon madrone, or California madrone, is one of my all-time favorite trees. it’s so incredibly recognizable, especially in its young age, that if they exist near you, you should be able to easily spot it! another fun thing about these guys is how sensitive, yet resilient they are. they THRIVE in the worst, albeit very specific conditions. rocky soil, dry, but watered... sunny and hilly! water them too much and they will not be happy! which tree should i cover next?! #treefacts #treetalk #natureisneat #natureeducation #fyp

After hours of searching Obstruction Pass State Park in Washington, I found the most beautiful, twirling, multicolored madrone trees. They were absolutely perfect and I’m so pleased to share them with you! Please enjoy my 48” x 32” original oil painting, “Madrones at Sunrise.”

Arbutus menziesii grows natively in Oregon but only succeeds under very specific conditions. Most failures come from overwatering, soil compaction, or root disturbance. Climate * Native to southwest Oregon and coastal regions * Thrives in Mediterranean pattern: wet winters, dry summers * Sensitive to prolonged freezing and inland humidity extremes Soil * Requires well-drained, rocky or sandy soil * Fails in clay or compacted ground * Prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH * Does best on slopes, hillsides, or disturbed ground Water * Critical rule: no summer irrigation once established * Young trees need minimal, infrequent watering * Overwatering = root rot (primary killer) Sunlight * Full sun only * Will struggle or die in shade or dense forest competition Root sensitivity * Extremely sensitive to transplanting * Best established from small container stock or direct seed * Do not disturb roots once planted Elevation & placement * Common from sea level up to ~3,000 ft * South- or west-facing slopes ideal * Avoid low, wet valleys Growth behavior * Slow to moderate growth * Develops deep taproot early * Drought-resistant once mature Common problems * Fungal diseases in wet soils * Leaf spot and dieback in humid inland zones * Sudden death after irrigation or landscaping disturbance #woodworking #liveedgewood #madrone #hardwood #woodworkers
