"It is dusk, time for their daily bath" an unseen voice ushered in a ritual of tenderness, a longing that needed no words, that flowed uninterrupted like a gentle spring turning to raging river turning to calm ocean that churns quietly over and over again.
As the two beautiful beings, one a Malasar tribe member and his beloved elephant walked past me at the end, I realised that I disagreed with something profoundly. This wasn't just an evening routine. This was a love being felt in almost perfect circles, like a prelude on a piano that runs gently from one horizon to another, carrying with it a lifetime of curiosity.
In this act, there was no sense of time. There was no dusk, no dawn. Time was immediate. It was furiously now. It moved fast or slow depending only on the rhythm of their touch. Sometimes they were still firmly in the yesterday. They could choose if they wished to live forever lives in one evening alone. It is only in someone else's gaze, in the presence of my frame, that they are reminded that time has passed. It is only then that they realise how fragile the other is, how fleeting this moment is. It is only then that they are chained in the cruel ways of time.
Once I pass, once they are again by the river, they will again find forever. This I believe is the true nature of love, it is absolute compassion in the face of the brutality of time. It is to slow down; the spinning of the earth, the dancing of the stars. It is to not crumble, to find in each other's presence an eternity in the now. #malasar
