Published in 1581 by the German theologian and cartographer Heinrich Bünting, this remarkable world map became one of the most famous and unusual representations of the Renaissance.
At first glance, it looks like a simple three-leaf clover. Yet each leaf represents one of the three continents known to Europeans at the time: Europe, Asia, and Africa. At the center lies Jerusalem, following a medieval tradition that placed the city at the heart of the world.
Unlike modern maps, Bünting’s goal was not purely geographical. His work was also symbolic and religious. The clover shape most likely refers to the Holy Trinity, a central concept in Christian belief.
The map appeared in his book Itinerarium Sacrae Scripturae (“Journey Through Holy Scripture”), a work intended to help readers visualize the places mentioned in the Bible. For Bünting, understanding the world also meant understanding sacred history.
Although the great age of exploration had already begun, much of the planet remained poorly known to Europeans. This map reflects a time when geographical knowledge, religious beliefs, and artistic traditions were closely intertwined.
Today, it continues to fascinate viewers both for its unusual appearance and for what it reveals about the sixteenth-century worldview. More than a navigational tool, this map was an attempt to give spiritual meaning to geography.

Two days into summer camp: creating fantasy islands from beans, dice, string, and tea. 🌍✨
Every map is unique, and next the kids will use them as the setting for their own adventure stories. I love projects where art and writing come together.
