Same woman. Different relationship with food. 2019 Mandi genuinely thought she was doing everything right. I had already healed so many conditioned beliefs around food. I wasn’t fasting til 2pm. I wasn’t skipping meals bc I didn’t FEEL hungry. I thought I was fueling. but I was eating around 1,800 calories a day while trying to be an endurance athlete. I ran the entire NYC Marathon on 2/3 of a serving of Clif Bloks because I was afraid of sugar.🙈🙈 I had been taught what so many of us were taught: Sugar is bad. Carbs are the enemy. Eating less is healthier. and when everyone around you believes it too, that’s a hard mindset to break. I didn’t know what I didn’t know. so when I was exhausted all the time… had brain fog… random injuries kept popping up… legs never felt fresh… sleep sucked… and my endurance plateaued… I was conditioned to believe it was because I was in my 40s…. “perimenopause”… “just what happens to women my age.” BUT once I started eating enough to support my training, More energy. Fat loss. Less brain fog. Fewer injuries. Better recovery. and… I got faster…. bc my body finally had the resources it needed to adapt. Sometimes the answer isn’t more discipline… Sometimes the answer is more fuel and a strategy. if you’re training consistently, doing “all the right things,” and still feel exhausted, stuck, injured, foggy, or like your fitness isn’t matching your effort… before you assume you’re broken and that’s just how it is, ask yourself: are you actually giving your body enough to work with miles macros and mindset wise? miles• macros• mindset 🎥 @jmvarnum always 🤍 #runningtips #marathontraining #womenwhorun #mastersrunner #runnergirl runcoach endurancerunner sportsnutrition fuelyourbody eatforperformance carbsarefuel runnerlife marathonrunner runningmotivation RADrabbit runningcommunity perimenopausefitness womenshealth strongnotskinny recoverymatters trainhardrecoverhard
THIS SEASON ASKS FOR A DIFFERENT APPROACH. 40 didn’t phase me, I was excited for the decade, but I’ll admit when perimenopause symptoms started I was caught off guard even with ALL the knowledge I have! 👉I’m grateful for the way it’s refocused my training. 👉Given me insights to better help masters runners. 👉I genuinely want everyone to know that it’s not game over and yes, it may look different (for you than a friend even!), but so much is still possible. 👊Cheers to being the runners who are going to be part of the first generation of “70+ only” races because so many of us will still be running! 🫶Share it. Let’s do this! Let’s support and encourage. Need help with your training? I’ve met a 60 year old runner who aggressively ramped up their training for an upcoming race, picked up an injury and then said “I guess I’m getting too old for this.” I’ve met another runner in their late 50s who was frustrated with weight gain so they started counting calories and aiming for 1800 / day. When they picked up a bone stress injury they said “maybe it’s time I switch to cycling. I just don’t recover like I used to.” Sometimes it’s not that you’re getting old! You’re making the same training mistakes the 20 year olds are making but you’re blaming your age when you get hurt. Credit to @sarahall3 for the idea for this reel. She recently put up an amazing post about turning 43 and how she approaches aging as a masters runner who is also a professional runner. Sometimes it’s not that you’re old! You’re just over training, not sleeping enough and not eating enough 🤷‍♀️ #injuryprevention #marathoner #physio
At 51, I’m still chasing running goals. Still looking forward to running! Still getting stronger!! Still getting faster! Still improving! And I plan to keep running for decades. This 51-year-old Indian Aunty has plans and LOTS more races to run!! Getting older doesn’t mean you stop growing as a runner. You can still run, still improve, but your training has to evolve. If you’re a runner over 40 or a masters runner, what running goal are you still chasing? ⭐️ The Journey Back ⭐️ In 2002, during my freshman indoor season, I ran a 5000m in 16:13. It took 25 years to reach that speed again—and ironically, I wasn’t even trying to. In high school and college, hitting specific times meant everything. Today, that speed is just a fortunate byproduct of doing what I love. Long ago, I let go of perfectionism and shifted to a mindset where the process IS the goal. Last Saturday, the real goal was simple: run my best and share the experience of running with my daughters and niece 👯‍♀️. Running a fast time was exciting, but it was only one piece of the evening. Watching them race and hearing them cheer me on every single lap is what made it truly special. It took over two decades to find this pace again. Your fast years are never behind you; they just change shape. 💫 Shout out to @fastwomen for capturing the 2002 Terrier Classic on Boston University’s old wooden banked track. And @koneill328 for being a lifelong teammate and lending me racing shorts.❤️ #mastersrunner #runningmotivation #trialsofmilesracing #momswhorun #5k
If you would’ve asked me 10 years ago where I would be at 40, I probably would’ve told you either in prison or dead. But God had other plans. Tomorrow I celebrate another year of life by chasing another finish line. First marathon as a masters runner. 26.2 miles for my birthday. Thank you to everyone who messaged, I appreciate yall 🙏🏾 Almost time to dance.
Where my masters runners at? 🙋🏻‍♀️ I dunno, but masters runner means over 40… There should be another name for us runners over 50, just sayin’ 😉 Age is just a number!!! Keep crushing it ladies 💪🏼 . 🩷💜🩷💜🩷💜🩷💜🩷💜 Outfit by @stilettorunning . , . #mastersrunner #fasterasamaster #runtoinspire #womenrunning #womensrunningcommunity #runnergirl #halfmarathoner #marathoner #halfmarathontraining #marathontraining #runningapparel #runcoach #stilettorunning
Keep your easy days easy and your hard days hard. I thought it would be interesting to see what my average paces were for my easy days and for my hard days for comparison during the month of February. I couldn’t believe I had a 3 minute and 20 second difference! As a masters runner (someone who is over 40 years old), I have noticed that I am needing to recover much more than I did in my 30s. So I have been working really hard at sticking to the 80/20 rule where 80 percent of your miles are easy effort. And the other 20 percent are hard. That means if you run 40 miles a week, 8 miles should be hard, and the rest should be easy! Turns out, I did just a smidge over on the hard effort last month (22%), but I’m still feeling good and will keep working on it throughout March! Since it’s the first day of a new month, why don’t you give easy running a try? Let me know if you have any questions and you can always shoot me a DM 🙂. #newmonthnewgoals #statmajor #runningreels #runningstats #runner #runningmotivation #runningcommunity #runners #runtheworld #easydayseasy #runningviews #seenonmyrun #mastersrunner #runningtips #runcoach #slowdown #irgtraining
Spencer is back! 🏃‍♂️💨 This time, our Runner’s Depot Racing Team Captain is talking about simple ways to stay in shape as a masters runner—and one of the biggest? Getting plugged into a running group. 🤝 With 16 years of competitive running, sub-3 marathons, multiple overall race wins, and low-17-minute 5Ks into his 50s, Spencer knows a thing or two about staying strong over the years. 💪 One thing that’s helped along the way is having a running group around him. A group can bring consistency, accountability, motivation, and a whole lot more fun to your miles. Whether you’re training for your next PR or simply looking to keep moving, there’s a place for you in our Runner’s Depot running community! Health is the real foundation for all your running goals. Want to run faster? Want to run farther? It starts with knowing your body and doing what you can to create health. It sure makes training more fun when you feel good too!! I wish I’d understood this in my 20’s. But I’ll never take my health for granted again. @insidetracker is part of my plan for this. Staying on top of ferritin levels that tend to be low or now paying attention to hormones in perimenopause.
